A native of Danville, Kentucky[1], Harris started playing the piano by age 9. His first formal vocal training came when he attended college at Western Kentucky University, from which he graduated in 1969. He later became a part of the popular Gospel touring group "The Spurlows." He gained fame with both his solo work, and his work as part of the Gaither Vocal Band, headed by Gospel musician and recording executive Bill Gaither.
His many live and televised appearances include Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, The 700 Club, several Billy Graham crusades, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, numerous Gaither Homecoming shows, and his own Christmas special. In his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Harris has made many appearances on the WHAS Crusade for Children, a long-running local telethon benefitting children's charities.
Of his many chart-topping songs, perhaps his best-known are his duets with Sandi Patty called, "More than Wonderful" and "I've Just Seen Jesus." His song, "Mighty Spirit" was featured in a 1993 television campaign for the Points of Light Foundation, headed by President George H. W. Bush; he performed the song for Bush and his wife Barbara at the White House.
Harris has received an honorary doctorate of music from Campbellsville University in central Kentucky. He was inducted into the Western Kentucky University Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1993.
Harris, his wife Cynthia, and children Lonnie and Teresa have lived in Louisville for more than three decades. Despite his schedule, Harris serves as a deacon in his home church, and previously served as its treasurer. Harris is well-known within the Gospel music industry for his reluctance to schedule performances that take him away from his family for any length of time.

Dream On
Larnelle Harris Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
God spoke to him, told him that He'd chosen him
And when others didn't understand Joseph still believed
And trusted Him, trusted and was willing to
Dream on when the world just doesn't believe
God has promised never to leave him alone
Dream on, follow hope wherever it leads
Dare to listen for the music
Keep on following the star
Morning can't be far
Dream on
There's not a valley deep enough that He can't lead you through
He'll walk with you, walk the roughest roads with you
No mountain ever rose so high that you can't climb with Him
And stand up tall, stand and look down on it all
Dream on when the world just doesn't believe
God has promised never to leave you alone
Dream on, follow hope wherever it leads
For in the seed of dreams there's promise of the dawn
Dare to listen for the music
Keep on following the star
Morning can't be far
Dream on
Dare to listen for the music
Keep on following the star
Morning can't be far
Dream on, dream on, dream on
The lyrics to Larnelle Harris's "Dream On" center around the theme of persevering through difficult times and holding onto hope and faith in God even when the world doesn't believe in you. The song takes inspiration from the biblical story of Joseph, who as a young boy had dreams that God had chosen him for a special purpose. Despite facing opposition and setbacks, Joseph remained steadfast and trusted in God's plan for his life. The lyrics encourage listeners to follow Joseph's example and hold onto their dreams even when it seems impossible.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Dream on," encouraging listeners to keep dreaming even when faced with obstacles or doubters. The lyrics remind listeners that God has promised to never leave them alone, and that in the seed of their dreams, there is a promise of a better tomorrow. The bridge of the song urges listeners to keep listening for the music and following the star, a metaphor for staying attuned to God's voice and guidance.
Overall, "Dream On" is an uplifting anthem of perseverance and hope, drawing from the biblical story of Joseph to inspire listeners to hold onto their dreams and trust in God's plan for their lives.
