Rhapsody in Blue
Larry Adler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Story about a girl)
(Story about the world)

Suddenly I'm something I'm not
I'm something that you bought
Was it something I said
My friend
Little girl are you tripping on this
Are you tripping all over it
You better come up for air

A Story about a girl
A Story about the world

Are you waking up slowly
Nothing but lonely
Are you waking up
Holding, holding your breath
Are you looking for something
I promise you one thing
I promise I'll always, always
Be there

Baby girl, stand up and fight
This is not some paradise
It's just where we live
Finally you think you're alright
Then it eats you up alive
You better get used to it

A story about a girl
A story about the world

Are you waking up slowly
Nothing but lonely
Are you waking up
Holding, holding your breath
Are you looking for something
I promise you one thing
I promise I'll always, always
Be there

With all my faith
And all my heart
And all those simple things you are

I know
It's stuck inside your head
You're alone
You better get used to it
And I know
The feeling has to end
You're strong
It sucks you in again
And you're lost
You can't make any sense
This world
It tears you limb from limb
And hold on
You're nothing but the best

Are you waking up slowly
Nothing but lonely
Are you waking up
Holding, holding your breath
Are you looking for something
I promise you one thing
I promise I'll always, always
Be there

With all my faith
And all my heart
And all those simple things you are

With all my faith

And all my heart
And all those simple things you are

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song by Larry Adler seem to be addressing a girl who is struggling with loneliness and the difficulties of life in our world. The singer seems to be trying to offer comfort and support to this girl while acknowledging the harsh reality of the world they are both living in. The opening lines suggest that the girl may be feeling like she is not herself and that someone may have bought or sold her in some way, perhaps indicating a loss of agency or control. The lines "little girl are you tripping on this / are you tripping all over it / you better come up for air" suggest that the girl may be getting overwhelmed by something and needs to take a break and regain her perspective.

The chorus repeats the lines "a story about a girl / a story about the world" which could suggest that the girl's individual struggles are representative of broader societal issues. The singer recognizes the girl's sense of isolation and urges her not to give up, to hold her breath and keep looking for something worth fighting for. They promise to always be there for her, to support her through the ups and downs of life.

The second verse continues to address the girl's struggles, acknowledging that even when things seem to be going well, life can still be "eating you up alive." The singer urges the girl to "get used to it" and to stand up and fight for herself. They acknowledge that the world can be a harsh and difficult place, but encourage the girl to keep pushing forward with faith and heart.

Overall, the song seems to be offering a message of hope and encouragement to anyone who may be struggling with loneliness or feelings of disconnection in our complicated and often challenging world.

I was fortunate enough to work on this record with George and Larry at Air Studios in 1994. Larry told some great jokes!

As commented here and many time previously, Larry was a genius and on his own, made the harmonica recognised as a truly orchestral instrument! Larry was known to have played on the Hohner harmonica (or mouthorgan as he preferred to call it) and Hohner acknowledged that because of him they sold millions of their instruments. I met Larry in 1995 through my work as a professional photographer at which time my gallery was based in Harrods and we became friends. This came about as I have a music background and also play the chromatic harmonica but I am certainly not in Larry’s unique league! Throughout the last 6 years of his life, I had many memorable occasions with him at private and public events and when he left the stage in 2001 at the age of 87 I decided to write a tribute to him which was published in 2014 to coincide with his centenary. Others were invited to write their own tributes and reflections including Sting, Sir George Martin, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Sir Michael Parkinson, Itzhak Perlman and many others. The title is ‘Reflections, A tribute to Larry Adler, Harmonica Genius’ for anyone that’s interested and is available in paperback, e-book and audio version (all through Amazon). The audio version is special as I have access to unique recordings of Larry speaking that are incorporated into this version.

Now I also spent a lot of time with him after 1997 and have also recorded him talking as well as about 30 tracks of him playing Gershwin and some of his original unpublished and not recorded compositions. Perhaps we should get in touch?

Adler makes it sound as if it had been written for the harmonica. That's actually some serious blues harp.
