pretender
Last Page First Lyrics

Pretend you love me
Now tell me what youd say to let me know
Cause here I am.
Pretend you care about me,
Now do your best to show me how you feel
Cause here I am.
Its amazing how familiar your pretending sounds to me,
Acting like you love me when youre lying through your teeth.
But I can see much clearer since youve gone,
That you've just been pretending all along.

I finally see you
For who you really are
And you cant change that now,
No matter how you try.
I'm finally waking up,
And things are clearer now.
Youll never get me back
No matter how you try
No matter how you try.

So much for good times.
You seemed to be so happy here with me.
Now I wake up angry when I meet you in my dreams.
And I can see much clearer since youve gone
That you've just been pretending all along.

I finally see you
For who you really are
And you cant change that now,
No matter how you try.
I'm finally waking up,
And things are clearer now.
Youll never get me back
No matter how you try
No matter how you try.

Dont even bother cause its over
I cant play this anymore.
I have cried but now its over
Every thing we had just walked right out the door.

I finally see you
For who you really are
And you cant change that now,
No matter how you try.
I'm finally waking up,
And things are clearer now.
Youll never get me back
No matter how you try
No matter how you try.

I'm finally wising up to you,
And I finally see you.
Yeah I finally see you.
I'm finally wising up to you.

Youll never get me back,
No matter how, no matter how, no matter how you try.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Pretender" by Last Page First seem to be about a relationship in which one person is pretending to love and care for the other. The first verse asks the person pretending to show and tell the singer how they feel. The chorus reveals that the singer has finally seen through the pretense and understands that they will never get their partner back, no matter how hard they try. The second verse describes the aftermath of the relationship and the pain that the singer experiences when they dream about their former partner. The final verse is a firm rejection of any attempts to revive the relationship.

Throughout the song, the lyrics suggest that the person pretending is lying "through their teeth." This phrase implies that the pretense was not accidental but deliberate; the pretending partner was fully aware of their deception. The use of the word "finally" several times throughout the song suggests that the singer has been in denial or blinded by their feelings for some time, only now realizing the truth.

The chorus is the most memorable and emotionally charged part of the song, with its emphatic assertion that the pretending partner will never get the singer back. The repetition of "no matter how you try" adds to the song's sense of finality and closure.

The Platters
Oh yes I'm the great pretender
Pretending that I'm doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell
Oh yes I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I play the game but to my real shame
You've left me to dream all alone
Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not (you see)
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around
Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around
(Still around)

Many great memories of being a kid in the 70's and my parents playing this song and other hits from the '50's every weekend. Of course I 'pretended' that I hated it but got myself busted one day when my dad came home and found ME listening to this!

@melissasalasblair5273

Perfection especially the title because it's a great movie too lol 🃏

@swellmate12

umm, actually it got pretty old, if it was born in 1955 then it would be 68 years old this year, which is pretty old in my personal opinion.
