I Wish
Last Train Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, I wish it would rain
And wash my face clean
I want to find some dark cloud to hide in here
Love in a memory
Sparkled like diamonds
When the diamonds fall they burn like tears

Once I had a love from the Georgia pines
Who only cared for me
I wanna find that love of twenty-two
Here at thirty-three
I've got a heart on my right
One on my left neither suits my needs
No, the one I love lives a-way out West
And he never will need me

I'm gonna pack up my two step shoes
And head for the Gulf Coast plains
I wanna walk the streets of my own hometown
Where everybody knows my name
I wanna ride the waves down in Galveston
When the hurricane blow in
Cuz that Gulf Coast water tastes sweet as wine
When your heart's rollin' home in the wind

When the diamonds fall, darlin'
They burn like tears

Overall Meaning

In "I Wish" by Last Train, the singer is expressing a yearning for emotional release and escape from their current situation. The opening lines, "Oh, I wish it would rain / And wash my face clean" suggest a desire for a physical cleansing that represents a mental release from pain or frustration. The singer then longs for a "dark cloud to hide in" which can be interpreted as a desire to escape reality and all its complexities.

The following lines reference a past love that was once valuable to the singer. The love "sparkled like diamonds", but now that it is gone, it "burn[s] like tears". The singer regrets the loss of this love and seeks to find an equivalent in the present. They recount a love from their past, from Georgia, but want to find a similar love at their current age of thirty-three.

The chorus picks up again with the imagery of rain and diamonds falling as tears. The final verse talks about the singer's plan to escape their current situation by heading to the Gulf Coast. They want to walk the streets of their hometown where they feel a sense of belonging and ride the waves down in Galveston where they can find solace in the natural world. The sweeping emotions of the song and the poetic language used help to convey the singer's deep longing for escape and connection.

Probably the most underrated band ever!.Just finished listening every tracks from newly released album. Wow 👌

@BassPlayerNcl

Another overlooked classic from an album of strong contenders. Charlie uses a tremolo effect and some slight overdrive on his bass during the verse to get that ‘blurry’ sound. Back when this album was released, I never heard anyone play so creatively in the context of a five piece rock outfit. Still love it 😊🎶🎵❤️

Train is an exceptionally talented band that is under rated. Some of my favorite songs are ones that were never or rarely played on any radio station. The songs that are over played for the masses are not the ones I prefer.
