Glória
Laura Branigan - Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gloria, you're always on the run now
Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow
I think you've got to slow down before you start to blow it
I think you're headed for a breakdown, so be careful not to show it

You really don't remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'?
If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody callin'?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the line, oh oh oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria)
But you really don't remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?

A ha ha, a ha ha, Gloria, how's it gonna go down?
Will you meet him on the main line, or will you catch him on the rebound?
Will you marry for the money, take a lover in the afternoon?
Feel your innocence slipping away, don't believe it's comin' back soon

And you really don't remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'?
If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody callin'?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the line, oh-oh-oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria)
But you really don't remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?

Overall Meaning

In the song "Gloria" by Laura Branigan, the lyrics suggest that the titular character is always on the run, chasing after somebody who may not even be interested in her. The singer advises Gloria to slow down before she ruins everything and possibly has a mental breakdown. Despite this warning, Gloria seems confused and lost, unable to remember what led her to this point. She even seems to hear voices in her head that might be calling her name.

The second verse of the song poses a series of questions about Gloria's future. Will she meet the person she's pursuing on the "main line" or "catch him on the rebound"? Will she marry someone for money or take a lover in the afternoon? The lyrics suggest that Gloria is losing touch with her innocence and that she may not be able to get it back.

Overall, the song's lyrics focus on the idea of a woman who is chasing after something that may not be worth getting. It warns against pursuing things too fiercely and losing touch with oneself in the process.

This song always reminds me of my mother. She had a pretty hard life, 2 divorces one from an abusive alcoholic, raised 4 kids, and died at 42 of cancer. But on occasion this song would play on the radio and she'd forget her worries for just a moment and sing it like Laura Brangahan herself. My best memories was when I was in college and we went to 2 weddings within 2 years and we danced to this practically clearing that dance floor. I just remember her wide smile and how happy she was in the moment. After the 2nd wedding, she was gone by the following year, but before she went I played this for her in the hospital and tho she couldn't sing, she flashed that signature smile. This song will forever and always be her song to me.

What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing. My mother has passed too. These memories are worth more than pure gold, I do know :)
