D… Read Full Bio ↴Laura Fygi (born August 27, 1955, in Amsterdam) is a Dutch singer.
Daughter to a Dutch father, a manager at Philips, and an Egyptian mother, a belly dancer by profession, Fygi lived with her parents in South America for the first eight years of her life.
Between 1987 and 1991, she was a member of popular Dutch girl-band, Centerfold. During performances, the trio dressed themselves in sexy lingerie. They had hits in the Netherlands and all over Europe, and were equally famous in Japan.
In 1991, the ladies of Centerfold stopped performing and Fygi (together with Rowan Moore) started a band called The Backlot. After one performance in Dutch theatre Paradiso, an album was expected, but Mercury Records had already asked Fygi to make a solo album. This first album, Introducing Laura Fygi, comprised mostly jazz numbers, and was produced by Ruud Jacobs. In the album, Fygi was accompanied by celebrated Belgian musician Toots Thielemans.
La Complainte De Mackie
Laura Fygi Lyrics

Le requin tue sans merci
Le surin au fond d'la poche
Sans reproche, c'est Mackie
Sur les bords de la Tamise
Le sang coule dans la nuit
On périt les poches vides
Gens de bien ou hommes riches
Disparaissent au grand jour
Sur leurs traces, quelqu'un passe
Qui ramène le butin
Jenny Trowler agonise
On s'étonne, on questionne
Oui mais Mackie ne sait rien
Le sang coule des mâchoires
Au repas du grand requin
Mains gantées et nappe blanche
Monsieur Mackie croque son prochain
The lyrics to Laura Fygi's song "La Complainte De Mackie" describe the notorious character of Mackie, who is known for his ruthless behavior and his ability to commit crimes without regret. The first two lines of the song speak of Mackie's "long teeth" and "formidable" nature, suggesting that he is a dangerous and unpredictable individual. The following lines mention his pocket knife, which he carries with him at all times, ready to use it whenever he needs to.
The second stanza describes the setting where Mackie operates, namely the banks of the Thames River. Here, at night, blood spills from the victims of his crimes. Whether someone is rich or poor, they become a target for Mackie if he sees an opportunity for gain. Even those who try to escape with their pockets full are not spared. The third stanza mentions Jenny Trowler, a victim who is left to die with a knife in her chest. Mackie is seen washing his hands in the gray water of the river, showing no remorse for what he has done.
In the fourth stanza, Mackie's true nature is revealed even more. He is not only a thief and a killer but also a rapist. The lyrics describe an elderly widow who is violated in her bed and robbed by Mackie, who is a true "gentleman" to those who do not know the full extent of his actions. The final two stanzas speak about the chaos that surrounds Mackie, as fires rage and death creeps closer. However, Mackie remains unfazed, eating his next target with a cloth napkin and gloved hands, as if nothing has changed.
