D… Read Full Bio ↴Laura Fygi (born August 27, 1955, in Amsterdam) is a Dutch singer.
Daughter to a Dutch father, a manager at Philips, and an Egyptian mother, a belly dancer by profession, Fygi lived with her parents in South America for the first eight years of her life.
Between 1987 and 1991, she was a member of popular Dutch girl-band, Centerfold. During performances, the trio dressed themselves in sexy lingerie. They had hits in the Netherlands and all over Europe, and were equally famous in Japan.
In 1991, the ladies of Centerfold stopped performing and Fygi (together with Rowan Moore) started a band called The Backlot. After one performance in Dutch theatre Paradiso, an album was expected, but Mercury Records had already asked Fygi to make a solo album. This first album, Introducing Laura Fygi, comprised mostly jazz numbers, and was produced by Ruud Jacobs. In the album, Fygi was accompanied by celebrated Belgian musician Toots Thielemans.

In Laura Fygi’s song La Puerta, the songwriter sings about a relationship that has ended. The song starts with the line “La puerta se cerró detrás de ti” which means “the door closed behind you” in English. This could be interpreted as the physical closure of a door or the end of a relationship. The next line of the song, “Y nunca más volviste a aparecer” means “and you never appeared again,” indicating that the person who left did not return after the door closed. The songwriter continues to describe their feelings about this person leaving, using the metaphor of “abandoned illusions” in their heart.
The refrain of the song repeats the line “La puerta se cerró detrás de ti” and adds “Y así detrás de ti se fue mi amor” which means “and thus my love left with you” in English. This indicates that the songwriter’s love for this person ended along with the relationship. They go on to say that they believed they could convince this person to love them, but that the person was unable to handle the difficulties that life threw at them. The songwriter then sings about the pains and joys of life, which are subject to chance and can both bring happiness and suffering.
Overall, La Puerta is a song about the end of a relationship and the emotions that come with it. The songwriter uses the metaphor of a closed door to describe how the relationship ended and portrays their feelings of loss and abandonment. They also reflect on the role of chance in life, which can bring both joy and pain.
