She began playing the guitar at the age of five, first being taught the blues by her father in front of the family fire, and has been enthralled by the songs and lyrics of the likes of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, James Taylor and John Mayall ever since. It’s not just the “golden-oldies” that Laura admires; she also harbours a rather deep love for alt.country’s favourite son, Ryan Adams. “He’s brilliant, there’s nothing that even comes close, he can paint the most amazing pictures in your mind.” Ryan Adams in turn had her album 'I Speak Because I Can' given to him by a producer friend. Ryan had written a lot of the material for his forthcoming album 'Ashes and Fire' but upon listening to her album he said; "I actually threw out the record I was writing and re-wrote my record based on that album because I thought to myself somebody's actually taking this very seriously ... It was amazing, a great motivation ... And it felt good to ask: 'What am I really capable of? I felt competitive again to write great songs."
Jamie T personally invited her on tour with him after being impressed by her modern folk-pop when he caught her playing just her second ever gig. Marling is part of the extended Way Out West family, having played five eminent shows at the label’s Brentford FC night before the club was finally moved on, and was also a member of Noah and the Whale until May 2008, contributing vocals and instruments throughout, and seen in the "Five Years Time" video playing recorder.
Following her London Town EP, Marling's debut album Alas I Cannot Swim was released by Virgin on 4th February 2008. Originally released in a large Song Box containing mementos and trinkets personal to the songs, as well as a concert ticket., the album was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize.
Marling released her second album, I Speak Because I Can, on March 22nd 2010.
The first track from her third album, A Creature I Don't Know, to receive radio airplay was "Sophia." The song is an ode to a mythical deity. (Sophia Songfacts).

Of all of them, he's the only one who did not mean that much to me
I tip my cap to the raging sea
My daughter, she's the pretty one
I married her off to the reverend's son
Now she lives in a sin-free world
Tip your cap to the brave old girl
Now all my rage been gone
Now all my rage been gone
I'd leave my rage to the sea and the sun
I'd leave my rage to the sea and the sun
Stole my children, left my son
Of all of them, he's the only one who did not mean that much to me
I tip my cap to the raging sea
Oh cover me up, I'm pale as night
With a mind so dark and skin so white
Is this the devil having fun?
I'd tip my cap to the raging sun
Now all my rage been gone
Now all my rage been gone
I'd leave my rage to the sea and the sun
I'd leave my rage to the sea and the sun
Now all my rage been gone
Now all my rage been gone
I'd leave my rage to the sea and the sun
I'd leave my rage to the sea and the sun
Laura Marling's "All My Rage" is a hauntingly beautiful song that tells a story of a mother who has lost her children due to her own actions. In the first verse, she laments that she had stolen her children and left her son behind. She acknowledges that he was the one who meant the least to her, and in a way, she is apologizing to him. She tips her cap to the raging sea, presumably the sea that took her children away.
In the second verse, the mother talks about her daughter, who is the pretty one that she married off to the reverend's son. She now lives in a sin-free world, possibly a reference to the religious nature of her daughter's life. The mother tips her cap to her daughter again, acknowledging her strength in navigating her new life without her mother or siblings.
The chorus of the song is a repetition of "Now all my rage been gone, I'd leave my rage to the sea and the sun." This can be interpreted as the mother finally letting go of the anger and pain that drove her to steal her children in the first place. She is saying that she wants to leave all her negative emotions behind and move on.
The bridge of the song is particularly poignant. The mother asks to be covered up as she is "pale as night" with a "mind so dark." She questions if this is the devil having fun, suggesting that she may feel like she is being punished for her past actions. She tips her cap to the raging sun, possibly as a symbol of the greater power that is in control.
Overall, "All My Rage" is a moving song that explores the themes of loss, regret, and acceptance. It's a reminder that sometimes we have to let go of our anger and pain to move forward.
