I Feel Your Love
Laura Marling Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Keep your love around me
Keep your love around me so I can never know what's going on
What's going on
Keep your love around me
Keep your love around me so I can't be alone
An electric fence, a silent defense to you all
You let me in, I loved you then
The first taste is free, then you had me
I feel your love
I feel your love

Keep your love around me
Keep your love around me so I can get along
An electric fence, a silent defense to you all
Let the river answer
Let the river answer so I can get along
What's going on, what's going on?
You must let me go before I get old
I need to find someone who really wants to be mine
I feel your love
I feel your love

Keep your love around me
Keep your love around me so I can never know what's going on
What's going on
Let the river answer
Let the river answer so I can be alone
An electric fence, a silent defense to you all
You must let me go before I get old
I need to find someone who really wants to be mine
I feel your love
I feel your love

Please let me go
Please let me go

Overall Meaning

In Laura Marling's song "I Feel Your Love," the singer offers a plea to have her lover's love continuously surround her, essentially creating a buffer or shield from the outside world. The repetition of the phrase "Keep your love around me" and the mention of an electric fence and silent defense evoke a feeling of protection and safety, as if the singer is guarded against the chaos and unpredictability of the world outside of the relationship.

However, the lyrics also reveal a fear of becoming too dependent on this love and losing a sense of identity and autonomy. The line "Keep your love around me so I can't be alone" suggests a fear of loneliness or a lack of purpose without the presence of the lover. Conversely, the later line "Let the river answer so I can be alone" implies a desire for solitude and space to reflect, but also hints at a potential struggle to assert that need in the context of the relationship.

The final lines of the song, "You must let me go before I get old / I need to find someone who really wants to be mine / I feel your love / I feel your love / Please let me go / Please let me go," showcase the singer's conflicting emotions and a reluctance to leave the relationship despite feeling trapped. The ambiguity and tension in the lyrics create a sense of vulnerability and authenticity, making it a compelling song about the complexities of love and relationships.

                added: 22 Jul 2015 // by: Music-News.com Newsdesk
Following the release of Short Movie 'Director's Cut', an expanded edition of Laura Marling's critically acclaimed fifth album, 'Short Movie', today sees the unveiling of the stunning video to accompany a brand new full band re-working of popular live track 'I Feel Your Love'.
A London Forum show is also set to take place on Saturday 5 September in between a full US tour in July & August and Australian dates in October. The gigs will showcase the full band dynamic, which has inspired the Director's Cut re-worked tracks.
Co-Directed by Cherise Payne and Laura Marling herself the video for 'I Feel Your Love' perfectly illustrates what Marling describes as the 'alchemical change that occurs within a musical group when you add a new brain or flavor to it'.
Director's Cut was inspired by the re-recording of two tracks from 'Short Movie' 'I Feel Your Love' and 'Warrior' and progressed even further the development showcased on the album. Short Movie marked a chapter in which Laura's sound and her recordings moved towards a more expansive and electric feel resulting in a much freer and looser sounding album than anything she has done before. In addition Director's Cut also features Daisy and David from the original recordings and previously only available on 7'.
Marling explains the influences behind the re-recordings and the subsequent Director's Cut reissue of the album:
'The addition of new guitarist Pete's style of playing combined with a lack of need to be delicate for the sake of hearing strings led to the tone becoming thicker and grittier. And as an unexpected result, we discovered that we like sticky rhythms...and seem to speak a similar language in rhythm and tone, it's a very special quite rare thing!'

@Floemmeuno

I really like her choice to let music free to have a change. One song can be beautiful in multiple ways.

@lyrilljackson

+Floemmeuno but this is old shit, every musician out there knows that and does it. nobody sticks to one thing, especially if your talking about just 2 choices, now if there are a million choices other than acoustic and electric i'd be fine with you sticking to a few but only 2 options and some bigot people want just one? plz.
