Wild Once
Laura Marling Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They put my hands in water
Told me I'm a god
I might be someone's daughter
Might be somewhat odd

But I was wild once
And I can't forget it
I was wild, chasing stones

The martyr who feels the fire
And the child who knows his name
They remember that there's something wild
And it's something you can't explain
Oh it's something you can't explain

They are wild
And they can't forget it
They are wild, chasing stones

It's hard if you can't change it
It's worse if you don't try
You will sit down to explain it
And you're constantly asking why
You are constantly asking why

Well, you are wild
And you must remember
You are wild, chasing stones

Does no one understand you?
Is that tired and familial long?
You must change what hands you
Give me something to go on
Give me something to go on

You are wild
And I won't forget it
You are wild, chasing stones

Well there is something just beneath
There is something just beneath
Something shy and hard to see

It's a ring that is clean
It's a ring

Overall Meaning

Laura Marling's song Wild Once is about trying to find and hold onto the wildness within oneself. The song starts off with the lines, "They put my hands in water, told me I'm a god," which suggests that the singer has been through some kind of ritual that has tasked them with a great responsibility. However, the following lines, "I might be someone's daughter, might be somewhat odd," suggest that the singer still struggles with their identity and sense of self. The chorus emphasizes the idea that the singer was once wild and can't forget it, even though they may be trying to behave in a more controlled and responsible manner. The singer also emphasizes the idea that there is something wild within everyone that cannot be explained or contained.

The second verse emphasizes the fact that the struggle for wildness and authenticity is ongoing. The lines "It's hard if you can't change it, it's worse if you don't try" suggest that it is important to keep pushing oneself to discover and hold onto one's sense of wildness, even if it means going against familial or societal expectations. The chorus repeats the idea that everyone is wild to some degree and should hold onto that wildness.

The following verses suggest that the struggle may be isolating, as others may not understand the singer's desire for wildness. However, the song ends on a more positive note, with the lines "You are wild, and I won't forget it, you are wild, chasing stones." These lines suggest that the singer has found a sense of community or support in their struggle, and that they will continue to pursue their wildness.

Overall, "Wild Once" is a song about the importance of staying true to oneself and embracing one's wildness, even when faced with societal or familial expectations to be more controlled or conventional.

I listened to this whole album this morning. It's a work of art.

My favourite track. Puts me in a daze. The way the strings occur. Also in a day when so many English musicians are doing their best to sound American accent-wise, I adore the fact that Laura is being true to herself and enunciating properly. Such a gorgeous album from start to finish.

I think songs inspired by her time in America are sung in an appropriate accent and UK inspired songs same. Simple as

Manpreet Singh

I love the way her accent pops out at the beginning. They put my hands in WAUTUH. I might be someone's DAUGHTUH. Also the song is beautiful.

Ana

This one does not sound like pray for me, really, but every time I hear "the child who knows his name" I think of "how does a child know where mother's weakness goes"
both amazing songs.
Laura is my favorite artist. Although I find great songs in each one of her albuns, A creature I don't know is still my favorite as a whole

Jayla Wideman

I can't help but imagine a doting mother, reminiscing on her childhood to her teenage child, warning them against her own mistakes. Even as she tries to dissuade them from those decisions, she also doesn't want to take away the discovery that adolescence and growth begets. She wants them to continue to be 'wild,' to have the moments that she had and that they deserve. That's why she's allowing them the freedom they deserve, that they require to have room to branch out and blossom.

Masterpiece of an album & masterpiece of a song.
