Young Love
Laura Marling Mystery Jets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I only knew your name,
I'd go from door to door.
Searching on the crowded streets,
For the face that I once saw.

If I only knew your name,
I'd go from door to door.
Tell me have you seen the girl,
I met just once before?

One night of love,
Nothing more, nothing less.
One night of love,
To put my head in a mess.
Is that you on the bus?
Is that you on the train?
You wrote your number on my hand,
But it came off in the rain.

One night of love,
Nothing more, nothing less.
One night of love,
Has left my bed in a mess.
Is that you on the bus?
Is that you on the train?
You wrote your number on my hand,
But it came off in the rain.

If I only knew your name,
I'd go from door to door.
Searching on the crowded streets,
For the face that I once saw.

If I only knew your name,
I'd go from door to door.
Tell me have you seen the girl,
I met just once before?

Young love, it never seems to last,
Far too young, until they have a past.
Playing games, people move so fast,
You don't need eyes to see if someone's got a heart of glass.

Young love, it never seems to last,
Far too young, until they have a past.
One night of love,
Nothing more, nothing less.
One night of love,
Left my heart in a mess.

If I only knew your name,
I'd go from door to door.
Searching on the crowded streets,
For the face that I once saw.

If I only knew your name,
I'd go from door to door.

Tell me, have you seen the boy,
I met just once before?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Young Love" by Mystery Jets and Laura Marling tell a story of a chance encounter resulting in a one-night stand. The singer of the song is eager to find the person again, but they don't know their name or have any other way of identifying them. The repeated line "If I only knew your name, I'd go from door to door," expresses a desperation to reconnect with the other person. The lyrics also touch on the fleeting nature of young love and the uncertainty that comes with it. The line "Young love, it never seems to last" acknowledges that initial infatuation may not translate into a lasting relationship. The chorus emphasizes the mess that a one-night stand can leave behind, both physically and emotionally.

The song's ambiguity leaves room for interpretation, but the lyrics convey a sense of longing and uncertainty. The singer's search for the other person creates a sense of urgency, while the repetition of the chorus links the themes of love and loss. The line "You don't need eyes to see if someone's got a heart of glass" suggests that the singer believes they fell for someone who may not have genuine intentions.

this song never gets old, its as fresh as the day my music producer friend showed it to me, I had a hard time in high school but the music he showed me made it easier and gave me purpose, I wanna throw him some love while I'm here as we've been through a lot together, try searching Lonely Gimmick - Beaches, it gives me Mystery Jet vibes and I'm honestly so impressed he made it, its one of those songs that make you happy when you hear it

@ImmuneToKnives

Crazy how some songs are time machines and will bring you back to a specific moment in your life. Take these moments and remember how far you've come. All the growing up we've done, all the mistakes, challenges and embarrassing moments we've overcome. Time flies and we have to remember to seize the day. Make more memorable memories.

“I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.”
