She was born Laura Nigro on 18th October 1947 in the Bronx, New York, of Italian-American and Jewish-American parents. As a child, she taught herself piano, read poetry, and listened to her mother's records by Leontyne Price, Billie Holiday and classical composers such as Ravel and Debussy. She composed her first songs at age eight. While in high school, she sang with a group of friends in subway stations and on street corners.
As a teenager she experimented with using different names, and Nyro was the one she was using at the time. She sold her song "And When I Die" to Peter, Paul and Mary for $5,000, and made her first extended professional appearance in 1966, at age 18, singing at the "hungry i" coffeehouse in San Francisco. Mogull negotiated her a recording contract, and she recorded her debut album, More Than a New Discovery, for the Verve Folkways label. The album provided material for other artists, notably the 5th Dimension.
In 1967, Nyro made only her second major live appearance, at the Monterey Pop Festival. Although some accounts described her performance as a fiasco that culminated in her being booed off the stage,[8] recordings later made public contradict this view.[
Nyro was best known by the general public – and had the most commercial success – as a songwriter rather than a performer. Her best-known songs include "And When I Die" (made a hit by Blood, Sweat & Tears), "Stoney End" (covered by Barbra Streisand), "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Save the Country" (all covered by The 5th Dimension), and "Eli's Coming" (a hit for Three Dog Night). Ironically, Nyro's own best-selling single was "Up on the Roof", a cover of the Carole King-Gerry Goffin hit originally recorded by The Drifters in 1962.
She died on 8th April 1997.
In 2012 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Crazy Love
Laura Nyro Lyrics

The river has seen
Our lost melodies
With their notes so warm
Moon banjo
Down a river in the breeze
He was singinâ??
Split apart
Shot through the heart
Why did you make me feel this
Need?
Crazy love, my name is in your
Blood
And what your true loveâ??s done
To me
You blew through my life
Some fleeting years ago
From the Midwest plains and
Rivers
To find the peace to grow
I was burning
And you walked soft
Talked soft
Like an animal
On silent feet
On a block of snow
You were looking for a true love
To light the way
But itâ??s all gone
With your deerâ??s eyes
And your ways of steel
You could travel miles and miles
In a blind reel
But Iâ??d know you, crazy love
And turn my foolish heart away
Oh, my lover
Father of my unborn star
I may ache behind your snake-cold
Back
But my will is as strong as you
Are
With your deerâ??s eyes
I know so well
Your ways of steel
I wonder if I ever knew you?
Crazy love, itâ??s a crazy love
Iâ??m empty from your weakness
Pregnant with the knowledge
And the flame of your true love
The song "Crazy Love" by Laura Nyro is a complex song that requires a closer look to fully understand its meaning. The lyrics describe the feelings of a woman who has been deeply hurt by a man who she once loved. The imagery used in the song is a mixture of natural imagery, with references to the river, the moon, and wildlife, and more abstract imagery that attempts to convey the emotions of the singer.
The first verse of the song introduces the "gypsy man" who represents the man who has left the singer. The river has seen the "lost melodies" of the relationship and the warmth of the notes that they shared. The moon and the banjo contrast with the image of the river, and the singer hears the man singing "catfish blues." From the very beginning of the song, there is a sense of nostalgia and loss, with the implication that the singer is remembering a happier time in the relationship.
The second verse describes the singer's pain at the loss of the relationship. She feels "split apart" and "shot through the heart" by the man who has left her. She asks "why did you make me feel this need?" which is a direct challenge to the man who has hurt her. The chorus of the song is where the title, "Crazy Love," comes in. The singer believes that her name is in the man's blood, and that he has done something to her through his "true love" that has left her feeling crazy.
The third and final verse has the singer addressing the man directly. She remembers him as someone who walked and talked softly, but who had a "deer's eyes" and "ways of steel." The deer's eyes are a traditional symbol of innocence and vulnerability, while the ways of steel suggest that the man was cold and unfeeling. The singer acknowledges that she still feels an ache behind her "snake-cold back" and that she is "pregnant with the knowledge and the flame" of the love that they once shared. Ultimately, she realizes that the love is crazy and empty, but it still haunts her.
