Goodnight
Lauren Sanderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I live in a Nike store
Right down the block from sixth
It′s in the city
And yeah I think you're kinda cool
But maybe I just like you cause you′re pretty
Yeah, yeah

Every time I'd save us
I'd put myself second
So 17
And even when I told you that
I needed time
You told me that you need me right now

I guess this is the time
To reprioritize myself
Where is the line?
Cause you′re takin all my light
Yeah, yeah

This don′t feel right
You make me feel so problematic
I say "Goodnight
I'll see you in the morning"
That′s not what you like
But I don't care anymore, no
Goodnight
Goodnight

Used to feel untouchable
Like nothing no no nobody could stop me
But ever since I met you
You′re depending on my every move
To make you complete
What's the point of making love
Then breaking up?
We′re hangin onto nothing
Makin out on your couch
I think it's time we say our goodbyes tonight

I guess this is the time
To reprioritize myself
Where is the line?
Cause you're takin all my light
Yeah, yeah

This don′t feel right
You make me feel so problematic
I say goodnight
I′ll see you in the morning
That's not what you like
But I don′t care anymore, no
Goodnight
Goodnight

Overall Meaning

Lauren Sanderson’s “Goodnight” is a relatable breakup song that expresses the artist’s vulnerability in a relationship. The song begins with a description of her whereabouts – living in a Nike store just down the block from Sixth street, and how she likes this person because they are pretty. However, she also acknowledges that her attraction could be superficial.

Sanderson then goes on to talk about how she always put her partner ahead of her needs, despite her young age (17). Even when she asked for time alone, her partner demanded to have her around. The artist’s evocative lyrics encourage her listeners to prioritize their needs before theirs to avoid being taken advantage of in a relationship.

Sanderson reaffirms that she doesn't feel right in the relationship, and the partner is limiting her from shining. As a result, she wants to put an end to the relationship and says “goodnight” to the person, knowing that they may not like it, but she can't ignore her own feelings anymore.

“Goodnight” is a reflection of Sanderson's personal experiences with relationship struggles, and it embodies themes of vulnerability, self-prioritization, and learning to be independent.

Same here, I used to be embarrassed of it because I felt boring but now I’m proud of it and I’m glad I could introduce my gf to Lauren’s music because she’s also from Indiana. (I’m from Ohio for reference) but yeah she’s great and I’m glad to see some big midwesterners 🥰

@limeywrites

you released goodnight right after i’d gotten out of the most toxic relationship i’d ever been in. i’d take super long drives listening to begin and goodnight back to back, just crying. trying to heal. trying to make sense of it. trying to feel strong for leaving, even though it really truly wrecked me. you got me through that. thank you💚 (here from your live🤠)

What a beautiful song, in my head all the time. Lauren Sanderson is one of a few authentic artists out there. She's so creative and gifted with a lovely voice. She doesn't pretend to be someone else. Her music is not meaningless as it is by many others, but it contains a message and tells stories from real life. Lauren, I think you're a very empathic and sensitive person and a real inspiration. You have come a long way with over half a million followers on Spotify. Your music deserves more attention because you're real and gifted. Thank you for sharing this journey with us. Much love <3
