Canada
Lauv Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waking up in your bed
It's almost like I've been here forever
I'm obsessed with your brain
And I'd unfold it if you let me

What if we move to Canada?
And buy some things we don't need
Bring your mother's dog, your
Paintbrush and some candy
And when they talk about those
People who up and leave
That could be us
That could be you and me

How you talk with your hands
And how you sigh like a movie
And we got luck so bad, we have to laugh
I guess we're lucky that
We don't need much outside of us, do we?

What if we move to Canada?
And buy some things we don't need
Bring your mother's dog, yeah
Paintbrush and some candy
And when they talk about those
People who up and leave
That could be us
That could be you and me

That could be you and me
That could be you and me
That could be you and me

So why don't we move to Canada?
And buy some things we don't need
Bring your mother's dog, your
Paintbrush and some candy
And when they talk about those
People who up and leave
That could be us
That could be you and me

Move to Canada
And buy some things we don't need
Bring your mother's dog, your
Paintbrush and some candy
And when they talk about those
People who up and leave
That could be us
That could be you and me

That could be you and me

Overall Meaning

In "Canada," Lauv tells the story of two people who are so in love that they feel as if they've been together forever. He's obsessed with her and wishes that he could see inside her brain. The song is an ode to the idea of running away to Canada with someone you love, leaving behind everything you don't need, and building a life together where it's just the two of you. The chorus repeats the idea of moving to Canada, buying things you don't need, and bringing her mother's dog, paintbrush, and candy.

Lauv goes on to describe the little things about his partner that he loves - the way she talks with her hands, and how she sighs like a movie. Even though luck hasn't always been on their side, they consider themselves lucky that they don't need much besides each other. The bridge and chorus repeat the idea of moving to Canada and leaving everything behind.

The song is a dreamy escape from reality, where two people can live in their own world and be happy with just each other. It's a reminder that sometimes the things we think we need are not actually necessary for happiness.

Bring your mother’s dog, your paintbrush and some candy
