Read Full Bio ↴There is more than one artist that performs with the name "Lawrence":
1) Lawrence (Electronic Music Producer, Dj and Label Head): Peter Kersten (AKA Lawrence, AKA Sten) used to be a gardener. His love of nature imbues a wistful spirit into his minimal techno structures, and a sense of organic progression is evident in all of his music. Having started the Dial label in Hamburg with his friends Carsten Jost and Turner, he became a producer of minimal club music that is equally apt for the dancefloor and the armchair. Some of Kersten’s favorite artists include Theo Parrish, Gas, and Isolée, a fact that tells of the many shades to be found in his work as Lawrence.
Following numerous EPs and two full-lengths spanning the labels Kompakt, Ladomat 2000, and his own Dial, Kersten released his incredible Spark EP on Ghostly International in the fall of 2004. Spark asserts a mastery of atmospheres, serving as a convincing argument that dance beats have a versatility that makes them immensely relevant and undeniably enjoyable in any setting. In Spring 2005, Lawrence released The Night Will Last Forever, his third album and first for Novamute.
2) Lawrence (Band): As NPR writes, “siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence are not your typical pair.” Clyde Lawrence, 24, and Gracie Lawrence, 21, have been writing songs and listening to countless Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, and Aretha Franklin records together in the living room of their family’s New York City apartment since they were little kids. After years of playing together, they officially created Lawrence, an eight-piece soul-pop band comprised of powerhouse musicians who happen to be their best friends from childhood and college. The keyboard-driven rhythm section and tight energetic horns create dynamic arrangements to support Clyde and Gracie’s explosive lead vocals and catchy melodies. http://lawrencetheband.com/bio/

Did I wear braces for long enough?
It sucks
I'm overly critical so sick of typical me
My TV said make your eyebrows thin
I pulled them all out now thick's back in
I can't win
I hide the freckles above my knee
I'll be whatever they wanna see
But then I tell myself
You
You're kinda lookin' like a stranger
Why would you ever wanna change your
Your freckles?
(You know you're beautiful)
And you
Why would you listen to the loser?
Why would you ever wanna lose your
Your freckles
(You know you're beautiful)
Yup, got full blown acne at twenty two
My year's been dope, thanks and how bout you?
Woo-hoo
I'm overly critical so sick of typical me
I hide the freckles above my knee (knee)
'Cause I'll be whatever they wanna see
But then I tell myself
You
You're kinda lookin' like a stranger
Why would you ever wanna change your
Your freckles
(You know you're beautiful)
And you
Why would you listen to the loser?
Why would you ever wanna lose your
Your freckles
(Uh, you know you're beautiful)
You know you're beautiful
You know you're beautiful
You know you're beautiful
Whoa-oh, you (yeah, you)
You're kinda lookin' like a stranger (you're kinda lookin' like a stranger)
Why would you ever wanna change your (why?)
Your freckles, freckles
(You know you're beautiful)
And you
Why would you listen to a loser?
Why would you ever wanna lose your
Your freckles
You know you're beautiful
Wait
Let me do it from the (you know you're beautiful)
I think I'm in like the wrong key
Please clap
"Freckles" by Lawrence is a song that delves deep into themes of self-acceptance, inner criticism, and societal pressures. The singer opens up about their insecurities and flaws, mentioning how critical they are of themselves and tired of conforming to societal standards of beauty. The lyrics reflect a struggle with self-image, from feeling like they are not good enough because of their acne or overplucked eyebrows to hiding their freckles to fit in with what they believe others want to see. This internal conflict is a common experience for many individuals who constantly feel the need to change themselves to meet certain expectations.
The chorus of the song serves as a turning point where the singer questions why they would want to change themselves or listen to negative influences, emphasizing the beauty in their unique features like freckles. The repetition of the phrase "you know you're beautiful" acts as a reminder to embrace one's authentic self and not give in to outside pressures or negative self-talk. This message of self-love and acceptance shines through as the singer starts to question the societal norms and expectations that have been weighing them down.
The lyrics also touch upon the idea of feeling like a stranger to oneself, hinting at the disconnect between one's true identity and the persona they feel pressured to portray. The mention of being in the wrong key and asking for applause adds a touch of vulnerability and rawness to the song, enhancing the themes of self-awareness and authenticity. The singer's journey towards self-acceptance and realization of their own beauty culminates in a powerful message that encourages listeners to embrace their unique qualities and not be swayed by external influences.
Overall, "Freckles" is a heartfelt and introspective song that addresses the struggles of self-perception and societal standards, ultimately delivering a powerful message of self-love and acceptance. Through its honest lyrics and emotive delivery, the song invites listeners to reflect on their own insecurities and celebrate their true selves, freckles and all.
