Lead singer DANIELLE HOWLE (who lives up to her last name) is a well known and respected song writer and solo performer in her own right. When she joined the band in 1989, that distinctive Lay Quiet Awhile sound came into full focus. But how exactly would one categorize that sound?
Critics described it as "eccentric buzz-mania" and "a blending of folk and punk without the sudden gearshifts that one might expect". The band described themselves as "melodic thrash folk metal". Just imagine Rickie Lee Jones being backed by the Throwing Muses (even the Pixies) with a definite southern twang and a little violin thrown in for good measure.
They built a reputation for being one of the South East's most promising (and eclectic) bands, LAY QUIET AWHILE opened for bands as diverse as FUGAZI (who became big fans) and the Indigo Girl, which is of course how they caught the ear of Amy Ray and landed themselves a recording contract with Daemon Records. Their first full length release was entitled Delicat Wire and was recorded at Inner Ear studios in Washington DC with FUGAZI producer Don Zientara twiddling the knobs.
Delicate Wire was licensed to Southern Records for release in the UK and Europe in May '94, and appeared with brand new artwork. DANIELLE HOWLE now has a solo career and has recently released a single, "Wrestler Song" on SIMPLE MACHINES.

Wait
Lay Quiet Awhile Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just watching the phone, for you.
To wait, it takes,
Love that's for real
And all, that I feel, inside to do.
I come prepared, to look in your eyes
And walk side by side,
Listen for tender words, I'd like to say
Like I love you today, and I'll wait
For you.
It's crazy, if you think, we're just friends.
Loving when, infatuation ends.
The wait for you, baby it now begins.
You sigh, when I come close to your heart.
You cry, from the start,
Please wait for me.
Your mind, shows, places you go,
And things you don't know.
Someday you'll grow.
Climbing a mountain high,
Your love I desire.
Inside my heart cries for you.
It's crazy, if you think, we're just friends.
Loving when, infatuation ends.
The wait for you, baby it now begins.
Baby, we're more, than friends
I know, the wait will end
The lyrics to Lay Quiet Awhile's song Wait express the feelings of a person who has been waiting for their loved one for a long time. They are waiting for their lover to call them or come over to see them. Despite the wait being long and arduous, the person believes that it is worth it because they are waiting for real love. They are ready to encounter the person they have been waiting for and walk with them, side by side. The person hopes to express their love to their lover, and also wants to hear tender words from them, such as "I love you today." The person believes that they are more than just friends with their lover and sees the beginning of a romantic relationship.
Throughout the song, the lyrics describe the longing, desperation and determination of the person who is waiting for their lover. The person wants their lover to know that waiting for them is an act of ultimate and genuine love, and that they will eventually be together. The song suggests that waiting for someone you love is not easy, but when the love is real, it's worth it.
