The Walking Sonnet
Lazarus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Did you get what you wanted,
The way that you wanted,
Before the rain hit the streets?
Oh san francisco, all the places that i go
Seem to be laughing now.
You picked up and left with an unfinished mess and you took my eyes with you.
Well did you forget that,
The ground wasn't wet, the day that i kissed you?
Well i still believe, that the moments we take are the moments we steal.
And the day it will come soon, when i will be you and you will be me.
I slip past the corner, where i met you last summer,
And talked to some folks i know.
I asked them the weather, i asked them the colors, that seeps out of my disguise
But they wont be bothered with my useless endeavor and so i will hit the streets.
I walk past the drunk ones, the dressed up and lonely, then enter the barren lands.
Where my eyes can be quiet,
My thoughts can be silence
And steps are the only songs.
Well i still believe, that the moments we take

Are the moments we steal.
And the day it will come soon, when i will be you and you will be me.

Overall Meaning

The Walking Sonnet by Lazarus is a melancholic song about lost love and the memories that haunt the singer as he wanders the streets of San Francisco. The song opens with the singer questioning whether the person he once loved got what they wanted before it started raining on the streets. San Francisco, the city where the singer once felt a connection with the people and places, now seems to mock his pain. The singer says that his lover left him with an "unfinished mess" and took his eyes with her, which can signify that she took his ability to see the world in the same way again. He also reminisces about the day he first kissed her when the ground wasn't wet, and he still believes that the memories they shared were stolen moments.

In the next verse, the singer walks past the corner where he met his lover the previous summer and remembers the conversation he had with people he knows, asking about the weather and colors that seep out of his disguise. However, the people he talks to won't bother with his useless endeavor, so he decides to hit the streets where he can be alone with his thoughts. He walks past the drunk ones, the dressed-up, and the lonely and enters the barren lands where he finds solace in the quietness. He still believes that the moments they shared were stolen, and despite the pain of losing her, the day will come soon when she will be him and he will be her, implying the transformation of identity that comes from heartbreak.
