Irene
Lazy Lester Lyrics

In the middle of a dream, I heard somebody call my name
The sweetest thing that you’ve ever seen
Was that girl they call Irene
But when I opened up my eyes
Honey I stood there to my surprise
The sweetest thing that you’ve ever seen
Was that girl they call Irene
Irene, Irene
You are the sweetest of my dreams
Irene, Oh Irene
Give me a big ole hunk of mine

But when I opened up my eyes
Honey I stood there to my surprise
Sweetest thing that you’ve ever seen
Was that girl they call Irene
Irene, Irene
You are the sweetest of my dreams
Irene, Oh Irene
Give me a big ole hunk of mine

Somebody Told Me

Somebody told me where you was last night
Somebody told me you was doing me wrong
I put my trust in your hands
Darling, baby, can’t you understand?
Somebody told me that you’re gonna leave this town
Somebody told me that you’re leaving me behind, Oh no!

Don’t you leave me baby
Don’t you leave me baby
Don’t you leave me baby

Somebody told me where you was last night
Somebody told me you was doing me wrong
I put my trust in your hands
Darling, baby, can’t you understand?
Somebody told me that you’re gonna leave this town
Somebody told me that you’re leaving me behind, Oh no!

Don’t you leave me baby

Don’t you leave me baby
Don’t you leave me baby

Overall Meaning

Lazy Lester's classic blues song "Irene" is a love song about a woman who was the sweetest thing the singer has ever seen. As he sings in the song, in the middle of a dream, he heard somebody call his name, and when he opened his eyes, it was Irene. He sings about her sweetness, and how he wants her by his side. The song is full of passion and longing, and the singer can't get over how sweet Irene is, and even when he wakes up and reality sets in, Irene still remains the sweetest girl he has ever seen.

The second part of the song "Somebody Told Me" is a lament on betrayal by a lover. The singer exclaims that someone has told him that his lover was cheating on him, and he is in shock and disbelief. He had put his full trust in her, and now he feels abandoned and left behind. He begs his lover not to leave him and pleads that she understands the pain of his betrayal.

In summary, "Irene" is a beautiful love song that speaks to the passion and longing of the singer for his lover, and "Somebody Told Me" is a lament on his betrayal by the same lover.
