The band was formed in Venice in 1966 by Aldo Tagliapietra (voice, guitars), Nino Smeraldi (guitars), Claudio Galietti (guitar and bass) and Marino Rebeschini (drums). Their first album, Ad Gloriam, was released in 1968. From their psychedelic and beat roots, they moved into increasingly sophisticated musical structures. Their 1973 album Felona e Sorona is widely regarded as one of the top albums in Italian progressive rock. By this time the band consisted of Tagliapietra (mostly on bass, with some guitar) along with keyboard player Tony Pagliuca, and drummer Michi dei Rossi. As the 1970s waned, Le Orme, like most progressive bands, shortened and simplified their music.
Starting in the late 1990s, a resurgence of interest in progressive rock led the band to revisit elements of their classic style, and the albums Il fiume (1999), Elementi (2001), and L'infinito (2004) have been received favourably in the progressive community.

Los Angeles
Le Orme Lyrics

Ed un senso di paura
Mentre il buio delle nuvole
Era ancora intorno a me.
Poi all'improvviso, sotto di me,
Un'oceano di luci:
Cosi tante in una volta sola
The above lyrics are from Le Orme's song Los Angeles. The song talks about the singer feeling an emptiness and a sense of fear within themselves while the darkness of the clouds surrounds them. However, suddenly, they see an ocean of lights below them, which they had never seen in their lifetime. The lights were from the city of Los Angeles, which is known for its glamour, liveliness, and technological advancements. The singer, in a way, finds relief and hope in the beauty of the city lights.
The lyrics of Los Angeles can be interpreted in different ways. On one hand, they represent the loneliness and fear that one feels when they are lost or confused. On the other hand, the song can be seen as a metaphor for hope and optimism that one finds in the midst of darkness. The city lights of Los Angeles represent this hope, which helps the singer overcome their fears and feel reassured.

Ed un senso di paura
And a sense of fear
Mentre il buio delle nuvole

Was still around me.
Poi all'improvviso, sotto di me,
Then suddenly, beneath me,
Un'oceano di luci:
An ocean of lights:
Cosi tante in una volta sola
So many all at once
Non le avevo viste mai.
I had never seen them before.
