The band was formed in Venice in 1966 by Aldo Tagliapietra (voice, guitars), Nino Smeraldi (guitars), Claudio Galietti (guitar and bass) and Marino Rebeschini (drums). Their first album, Ad Gloriam, was released in 1968. From their psychedelic and beat roots, they moved into increasingly sophisticated musical structures. Their 1973 album Felona e Sorona is widely regarded as one of the top albums in Italian progressive rock. By this time the band consisted of Tagliapietra (mostly on bass, with some guitar) along with keyboard player Tony Pagliuca, and drummer Michi dei Rossi. As the 1970s waned, Le Orme, like most progressive bands, shortened and simplified their music.
Starting in the late 1990s, a resurgence of interest in progressive rock led the band to revisit elements of their classic style, and the albums Il fiume (1999), Elementi (2001), and L'infinito (2004) have been received favourably in the progressive community.

Sacre montagne e larghi fiumi ora attraversano,
Fermo sulla scogliera rimani inerte
Mentre l'eco libera nei canti della sera le nuove verità.
The opening stanza of Le Orme's Pietro Il Pescatore suggests a sense of melancholy and lost opportunity. The sea, which was once a source of riches for the singer Pietro, no longer yields its treasures, and he is left to ponder what has transpired during the winter. His old fishing nets might have been corroded by time, leaving him unable to leverage the winds for a bountiful catch. As a new dawn approaches, Pietro must confront the reality that he may have lost the keys to his livelihood.
However, despite this sense of foreboding, the subsequent lines of the song suggest that there is still beauty and wonder to be found in the world. Sacred mountains and wide rivers are evoked in a call that travels from afar, urging Pietro to remain steadfast on the shore and witness another sunset. The echoing music of the evening carries with it new truths, inviting Pietro to contemplate the mysteries of existence.
Le Orme's Pietro Il Pescatore is a song that can be interpreted in many ways, but at its core, it seems to express a poignant blending of loss, renewal, and the enduring capacity for awe.
