Auld Lang Syne
Lea Michele Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should all acquaintance be forgot
And auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne

And surely you will buy your cup
And surely I'll buy mine
And we'll take a cup o'kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We too have run around the slopes
And picked the daisies fine
We've londoned many weary foot
Since auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne

We too have paddled in the stream
From morning sun to night
But the seas between us broad have roared
From auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne

We'll take a cup o'kindness yet
For auld langs syne

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" describe the tradition of remembering past friendships and happy memories as the New Year begins. The first verse of the song poses the question of whether old friendships and memories should be forgotten, followed by a declaration that they should not be forgotten, hence the repetition of "auld lang syne" which can be translated to "old long since" or "long ago". The second verse describes the sharing of a cup of kindness with a dear friend, acknowledging that they have shared experiences and traveled through life's ups and downs together. The third verse speaks about childhood memories of playing in streams and fields, ending with the realization that although time and distance may have separated them, they still share a bond of friendship.

The message of the song is about honoring the past and cherishing the memories of friendships and experiences that have shaped our lives. As we move forward into the future, we should not forget the people and moments that have brought us joy and laughter. The idea of sharing a "cup of kindness" is a fitting symbol of the spirit of togetherness and generosity that is often associated with the holiday season.

I am refugee. I haven't seen any family since 2014, and this is the song that I listen to when memories of them come crashing in. My grandpa passed away last year, and I hadn't seen him since I was 14. He raised me, and I miss him every day. This song reminds me of him and my family :'( :')
