Don't Rain on My Parade
Lea Michele Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't tell me not to live
Just sit and putter
Life's candy and the sun's
A ball of butter
Don't bring around a cloud
To rain on my parade

Don't tell me not to fly
I've simply got to
If someone takes a spill
It's me and not you
Who told you you're allowed
To rain on my parade

I'll march my band out
I'll beat my drum
And if I'm fanned out
Your turn at bat, sir
At least I didn't fake it
Hat, sir, I guess I didn't make it
But whether I'm the rose
Of sheer perfection
Or freckle on the nose
Of life's complexion
The cinder or the shiny apple of its eye
I gotta fly once
I gotta try once
Only can die once, right, sir?
Ooh, life is juicy
Juicy, and you see
I gotta have my bite, sir
Get ready for me, love
'Cause I'm a commer
I simply gotta march
My heart's a drummer
Don't bring around a cloud
To rain on my parade

I'm gonna live and live now
Get what I want, I know how
One roll for the whole show bang
One throw, that bell will go clang
Eye on the target and wham
One shot, one gun shot, and bam
Hey, Mister Arnstein
Here I am
I'll march my band out
I will beat my drum
And if I'm fanned out
Your turn at bat, sir
At least I didn't fake it
Hat, sir, I guess I didn't make it
Get ready for me, love
'Cause I'm a commer
I simply gotta march
My heart's a drummer

Nobody, no, nobody
Is gonna rain on my parade

Overall Meaning

In "Don't Rain on My Parade," Lea Michele sings a powerful anthem about seizing the day and living life to the fullest. The song is all about resilience, and finding the strength to pursue your dreams in the face of obstacles and naysayers.

The lyrics are filled with metaphors and vivid imagery. When she sings, "Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter," she's painting a picture of a world full of possibilities--a place where everything is rich and sweet. And when she says, "Don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade," she's warning anyone who might try to get in her way that she won't let negativity or criticism hold her back.

Ask the people who sit behind bootleggers, distracted by the light of screens, what they think.

I have now seen this performance from every conceivable angle and it never ever gets old

@balesjo

Very true. I've already watched it three times this evening. I keep hoping to see the finale filmed. The original play and movie ended with "My Man", and even though Streisand was stunning singing it, the number still ended the show on kind of an emotional low note. But Brice went on to have a long, successful career after Nick. I feel the new finale, combining "Funny Girl" from the movie with "DROMP" ends the show on a high note. While Fanny may be down that her marriage to Nick failed, she won't allow it to interfere with her career and stardom.
