Since the age of 14, she played the role of Wendla in Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's musical version of Spring Awakening since early workshops; following it up to the Broadway production. Michele was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance in Spring Awakening, as Lead Actress in a Musical.
On May 18, 2008, Michele left Spring Awakening with co-star Jonathan Groff and was replaced by former Wendla understudy Alexandra Socha. She performed in a reading of Sheik and Sater's new musical, Nero, in July 2008 at Vassar College, also featuring Idina Menzel and Michael Arden. On August 8, 9 and 10, 2008, Michele portrayed Eponine in the Hollywood Bowl's Les Misérables concert.
Michele can be heard on the original Broadway cast recordings of Ragtime and Spring Awakening, as well as the 2003 revival recording of Fiddler on the Roof.

My actions speak for what I can't say
'Cause I fall one step forward
To push you away, push you away
I wish that I could listen
To all the advice that I give away
But it's hard to see things clearly
I'm caught in the rain, caught in the rain
And my heart's too drunk to drive
I should stay away from you tonight
But in this blackout state of mind
Baby all I want is you tonight
When my head tells me "no"
My heart tells me "go"
So I'm hitting in the road 'cause I
I know my heart's too drunk to drive
But I'm on my way to you
Yeah, I'm on my way
To you, you, to you tonight
I'm on my way to you, you
To you, I'm on my way
Yeah there's a million voices
Screaming that this love's a dead-end road
But the only voice that I hear
Is telling me "go", telling me "go"
The sun is rising sober
While passion fades and I'm on my own
My helpless heart's hangover
I'm all out of hope, all out of hope
Where do we go? Where do we go?
Cause my heart's too drunk to drive
I should stay away from you tonight
But in this blackout state of mind
Baby all I want is you tonight
When my head tells me "no"
My heart tells me "go"
So I'm hitting the road 'cause I
I know my heart's too drunk to drive
But I'm on my way to you
Yeah, I'm on my way
To you, you, to you tonight
I'm on my way to you, you
To you, I'm on my way
And no one's words can stop me
I'm past the point of no return
No matter how it hurts me
I'm running to you, running to you
And my heart's too drunk to drive
I should stay away from you tonight
But in this blackout state of mind
Baby all I want is you tonight
When my head tells me "no"
My heart tells me "go"
So I'm hitting the road 'cause I
I know my heart's too drunk to drive
But I'm on my way to you
Yeah, I'm on my way
To you, you, to you tonight
I'm on my way to you, you
To you, I'm on my way to you
In the song "On My Way" by Lea Michele, the lyrics suggest a level of difficulty in expressing emotions and feelings. The first verse communicates how the singer's words are coated in "barbwire," while their actions speak volumes where their words might fall flat. They describe how they have a habit of pushing the person they desire away despite wanting to be close to them. The second verse reveals the singer is caught in a difficult situation where they hear conflicting voices in their head - one telling them to go and the other telling them to stay away.
The chorus details how the singer's heart is too drunk to make rational decisions, which suggests they are feeling vulnerable and uncertain. They acknowledge they should stay away, but their heart compels them to venture out and meet their desired person. The bridge communicates that no one can stop the singer, even though they are aware that their pursuit of this love might cause them pain, they feel it's necessary to take the risk regardless.
Through the lyrics of "On my Way," the singer experiences feelings of confusion, vulnerability, and hurt. They question their actions and understand that their heart is too intoxicated to make rational decisions. The song communicates the struggle within oneself while navigating love, despite the risks that come with it.
