Never Say Goodbye
Leatherface Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That old clock chimes.
Begin your diatribe.
A life full of flashbacks.
Has the effect of candlelight.
And like in the movies.
Music does play.
I'm walking along, alone, and I hear the theme tune play.
The hardest part is walking away.
Turning your back on what was, what was safe.

Don't you ever say goodbye.
Don't you ever.
Don't you ever say goodbye.
(Naa, naa, naa.)

When the easiest part is starting again.
Trying to avoid more of the same.
And what was blamed.
Soon becomes nonsense.
And what you were really thinking.
Was I was a mess.
I drive and drive.
Round and round my life.
That old clock rings time.
And the music plays again.

Don't you ever say goodbye.
Don't you ever.
Don't you ever say goodbye.
(Naa, naa, naa.)
Feels like Autumn.

Don't you ever say goodbye.
No, no, no.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Leatherface's song "Never Say Goodbye" speak about the difficulty of moving on from past experiences and leaving what was comfortable and familiar. The first verse mentions the effects of nostalgia, how it can create a warm and comforting atmosphere, much like candlelight. There is also a sense of feeling like a character in a movie, where background music helps set the tone of a situation. The singer is walking alone, and he hears the theme tune play, adding to the dramatic effect. The hardest part is walking away from what was, leaving behind what provided safety and comfort.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Don't you ever say goodbye," emphasizing how difficult it is to move on and leave things behind. This phrase can be interpreted not only as a message to others but also as a message to oneself. The song speaks about how the easiest part is starting again, but it can be challenging to avoid making the same mistakes. The past becomes a blur, and things that were once blamed become trivial. It's easy to drive around aimlessly, caught up in thoughts about what was. But ultimately, life moves on, and time does not stop, as reflected in the line "That old clock rings time, and the music plays again."

Overall, "Never Say Goodbye" is a bittersweet song that captures the feeling of longing for the past while recognizing the need to move on. It speaks to the listener's inner desire to hold on to certain moments and the fear of the unknown. The song is a reminder that while change can be scary, it is necessary for growth and progress.
