Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp
Led Zeppelin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I caught you smiling at me,
That's the way it should be,
Like a leaf is to a tree so fine.

Ah all the good times we had,
I sang love songs so glad,
Always smiling never sad so fine.
As we walk down a country lane,
I'll be singing a song,
Hear me calling your name.
Hear the whisper in the trees,
Telling mother nature bout you and me.

Well, if the sunshines so bright,
Or on our way it's darkest night,
The road we choose is always right so fine.

Ah can your love be so strong,
When so many loves go wrong,
Will our love go on and on and on and on and on and on.

As we walk down a country lane,
I'll be singing a song,
Hear me calling your name.
Hear the whisper in the trees,
Telling mother nature bout you and me.

My my, la de la, come on now it ain't too far,
Tell your friends all around the world,
Ain't no companion like a blue eyed merle.
Come on now well let me tell you,
What you're missing missing round them brick walls.

So, of one thing I am sure,
It's a friendship so pure,
Angels singing all around my door so fine.
Yeah, ain't but one thing to do
Spend my natural life with you,
You're the finest dog I knew so fine.

When you're old and your eyes are dim,
There ain't no old Shep gonna happen again.
We'll still go walking down country lanes,

I'll sing the same old songs,
Hear me call your name.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Led Zeppelin's Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp are filled with imagery of love and the beauty of nature. The opening lines convey a sense of mutual affection - the singer catches someone smiling at him and feels that it's the way it should be. The comparison of love to a leaf being to a tree is subtle yet poignant, suggesting that the two are meant to be together and are essential to one another's existence. The subsequent lines talk about the beautiful moments shared between the couple, where love songs were sung and smiles were plentiful.

The lyrics then shift to the setting of a country lane, where the singer sings a song and calls out the name of the person he loves. The whisper of the trees suggests that nature is aware of their love and acknowledges its beauty. The imagery of the sun shining bright or the darkest night suggests that whatever the circumstance, the road they choose will always be the right one. The lyrics then bring up the question of the strength of their love, whether it can survive despite the odds and whether it will go on forever.

The final lines of the song bring forth a different image, that of a blue eyed merle, a loyal companion that cannot be compared to any other. The singer is sure of his friendship with this companion, and angels singing around his door dramatize the purity of their relationship. The final lines talk about growing old together, where even if one's eyes are dim, they will still go walking down country lanes and singing the same old songs. The song is essentially about the beauty of love and nature, longevity and loyalty, and the moments shared between two people.

Line by Line Meaning

I caught you smiling at me,
I noticed you smiling at me, and I think it's a great thing, like a leaf is to a tree in its perfection.

Ah all the good times we had,
We've had some truly incredible times, full of happiness and joy, with me singing love songs and never feeling sad.

As we walk down a country lane,
While we take a stroll through the tranquil countryside scenery, I'll be singing a lovely song, calling out your name to the world to hear.

Hear the whisper in the trees,
Listen to the sounds coming from the leaves and branches above, as nature picks it up and sends out its signal about me and you.

Well, if the sunshines so bright,
Whether the sun shines with all its glory or if darkness envelops us, we always choose the right path that leads us to our destiny, never wavering from our choice.

Ah can your love be so strong,
In a world where love often falls apart, can our love be so sturdy and endure anything that comes our way?

My my, la de la, come on now it ain't too far,
Oh, it won't take too long, let's get going together on this journey. Tell your friends across the world there's nothing sweeter than the loyalty of a blue-eyed merle dog.

So, of one thing I am sure,
I know one thing for certain - our connection is pure and true, and it brings such goodness and light into my life.

Yeah, ain't but one thing to do
There's only one thing on my mind now - spend the rest of my natural life with you by my side.

When you're old and your eyes are dim,
Even when we both grow old and get weaker with each passing day, I know one thing - there won't be any more loyal companion than you.

Yes, unique is a very good way to put it.
It would probably be more appreciated if they had added a couple more of the non album released tunes to it like:

-Travelling Riverside Blues
-Hey Hey What Can I Do
-The Girl I love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair
-Bron-Yr-Aur (held back 5 years till Physical Graffiti

-Finished "St. Tristan's Sword" and put it on there too,
and removed "Hats Off to (Roy) Harper"

I had a dog from the age of 13 to 25 who saw me through the end of grade school, through high school, and through university. We walked every day in the forest and field behind our house for years, rain, snow and sunshine. She was my best friend. She died the summer after I graduated.

No dog I ever had or will ever have again will be quite like her. We were kids together and when she passed I was an adult. She was my constant companion through the entirety of my growing up. It's been 17 years now and she still sits in my heart like a big blossom of love. I've got tears running down my cheeks just writing this. Love you forever Zoe!

Nothing like the joy and love of your first dog! Just watch the video of kids reuniting with a lost dog, kids breaking down and crying with joy that their loved one is home. There is a lot that goes into raising a child, parents, home, school, community etc. But a child that was raised with pets will always be a more rounded adult, in my opinion. I grew up near my grandparents farm and my family all lived in the same town. We would always be at the farm because we could play in the barn, drive the tractors around and later as teenagers we had our dirt bikes (motorized), but me, my brothers and my cousins always had our dogs. Now my grandfather could barely keep all the grandkids names in order on a good day and heaven forbid if he got mad at you, he would have to run through all the names until he finally got the right one, then he could yell at you. So he had no chance with all the dogs. So every dog he came across was called fleabag. My grandfather was the sweetest man and his sour demeanor was always a put on. He loved us kids! So ever since his passing way back in the 80s I have named everyone of my dogs "Fleabag" in his honor. And yes I have to tell this story every time someone asks me for my dogs name, I usually get a smile out of them.

I cry reading this. I am so sorry for the loss of your Dog. But what a wonderful Companion. I will be at a loss when I Lose one of my pets. They are my life. I actually want to die before them. I am 47 now. Not much more to live for anymore. I would probably die from a broken heart.

When I watched the video, I saw my Kayleigh's eyes looking back at me in the dog picture. Merles are extraordinary animals, smart, loving, loyal, and protective. Each night, Kayleigh would go up the stairs to check on my kids when they were small, even when she developed bone cancer in her spine. She was the best companion and I miss her dearly.

@xisotopex

my life in the three years has done nothing but go downhill since my good boy died three years ago. it was a year before I stopped expecting him to greet me at the door when I get home... I have contemplated suicide, stopped dating, stopped taking care of myself, and gained 20 lbs. And at least once every month or more I second guess myself about not getting him put down and I will forever blame myself....

@xisotopex

@@LovesMike33 I was 50 when my good boy died.... the last 3 years have been the darkest I have ever known. I dont even know who I am anymore.... he was my life, he was like my eternal 3 year old toddler.... my son... and now he is gone.

A song that talks about a dog literally in its entirety: calls it Bron-Y-Aur Stomp.
A song that doesn't have shit to do with dogs: calls it Black Dog.
I love you, Robert Plant!

@barbaratatton3855

@santiagotorres1373

@HAL-rx5ln

@@santiagotorres1373 I know what Bron-Y-Aur is. The song is obviously not about it haha; it's about Robert's dog.
