Good Times Bad Times
Led Zeppelin (Definitive Collection Mini-LP Replica) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the days of my youth
I was told what it was to be a man
Now I've reached the age
I've tried to do all those things the best I can
No matter how I try
I find my way to do the same old jam

Good times, bad times
You know I had my share
When my woman left home
With a brown eyed man
Well, I still don't seem to care

Sixteen I fell in love
With a girl as sweet as could be
Only took a couple of days
Till she was rid of me
She swore that she would be all mine
And love me till the end
When I whispered in her ear
I lost another friend

Good times, bad times
You know I had my share
When my woman left home
With a brown eyed man
Well, I still don't seem to care

Good times, bad times
You know I had my share
When my woman left home
With a brown eyed man
Well, I still don't seem to care

I know what it means to be alone
I sure do wish I was at home
I don't care what the neighbors say
I'm gonna love you each and every day

You can feel the beat within my heart
Realize, sweet babe, we ain't ever gonna part

Overall Meaning

“Good Times Bad Times” by Led Zeppelin is a song about growing up, experiencing the ups and downs of life, and learning to deal with them. It represents the transition from youth to adulthood and the lessons that are learned along the way. The lyrics express a sense of nostalgia for the past and the realization that life is not always fair, but ultimately, the singer remains optimistic and committed to love and perseverance.

The first verse reflects on the singer’s upbringing and the expectations placed upon him to become a man. He has tried to do his best, but despite his efforts, he still finds himself stuck in the “same old jam”. The chorus, “Good times, bad times, you know I had my share”, acknowledges that life is a mixture of good and bad experiences and that everyone goes through them.

The second verse is about the tribulations of love. The singer fell in love at sixteen with a girl and believed she would be his forever. However, it only took a few days for her to leave him for another man. When he expressed his love for her, he lost another friend. This experience taught him about heartbreak and loss. Despite this, the chorus repeats, “Well, I still don't seem to care”, indicating that he has learned to accept such setbacks and move on.

Overall, “Good Times Bad Times” is a reflection on growing up, experiencing life’s challenges, and learning to move forward. It is a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

Imagine it's January 1969, a friend says, "Hey, check out this new album." And you put that turntable needle to this first song. Wow.
