He had some solo releases in the 1960's.

Andrews formed the doo-wop group Lee Andrews & the Hearts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1953. Four years later, their hits started coming: Chess Records picked up their first hits, “Long Lonely Nights” and “Teardrops” in 1957. Another hit, “Try the Impossible,” came out in 1958, after the group had moved to United Artists.

Lee Andrews' son is Ahmir Khalib Thompson, a musician who uses the stage name ?uestlove as part of the well known Philadelphia based group The Roots and in his solo career.

What a great song---don't get any better then this. Bring's back memories of my days in the Army while riding in a convoy from Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas to Ft Hood, Texas. Doo-Wop, the greatest sounding music to one's ear.

My husband was an original member of Rick & the Masters and they were in the studio when lee was recording and his group didn't get thre on time so rick& masters did the backup for him i have an original signed record from lee himself ,check out the guys doing let it please be you you'll love it

Man, his voice is so smooth. I remember meeting him one day at a flea market. Odlly enough I met his exwife two days before, and his son ?love a few days after. It was such a coincidence. I didn't know too much of his music, but I jhad sense enough to know that I was meeting a legend. Love his voice. It is like hot chocolate, just smooth!

customkey -- I know that Cameo/Parkway had their offices at 230 South Broad, northwest corner of Broad and Locust. Same with Swan. Catty-corner from Gamble and Huff. Maybe the recording studio was in a different building from the rest of the operation. I live right across the street from that building -- the Locust Theater also used to be in there. You're right about Philly music -- if you grew up with Blavat and Georgie and Hyski and Bill Wright Sr., it never gets out of your system.

I agree with you elly. Some of my favorite records are things I heard on Philly stations. I live in the NYC suburbs, but I used to be able to get Geator and Harvey Holiday when they were on AM in the 90s. I live too far to pick them up on FM

He is in an elite group among such singers as - Nat King Cole - Clyde Mc Phatter - Brook Benton - Sam Cooke - Johnny Mathis - Earl Grant. And. - Elvis - Yes Elvis - Remember “Can’t. This is another one that makes me feel like I'm standing on Broad Street, looking up at City Hall, and the statue of William Penn. City of Philadelphia. Old timers told me that Gamble and Huff's 309 Studio, at 309 S Broad, was the recording studio of Cameo Parkway records. Maybe this was cut there. It's now the home of Phila International Records. The Sound of Philadelphia gets in your blood.

@PJDooWop He once owned a Boutique Shop ath 52nd & Cedar Phila. (West side of 52nd Street) I don't know if the sign is still there which state's "Lee Andrew's Boutique." What a nice man. And, to think some day we all will be able to listen to Lee sing forever.

Go to the Village Voice website. There is an article on Questlove Thompson who is part of the Roots who is the band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He's Lee Andrews' son!

Thanks so much for the info! As you probably saw in the description, I suspected that this could have been Rick and The Masters but wasn't sure. You have confirmed that for me. Let It Please Be You is a killer! The other side of that one is great as well. My favorite is probably Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. My copy of that on Haral is really clean but the first half of the song hisses badly because the previous owner played it with a bad needle.

speedy45rpm, thanks for that info. I used to hear the old time musicians talking about recording for Cameo Parkway at 309 when I worked there cutting tracks for Gamble and Huff back in the '70's. But I didn't know that Cameo Parkway was at 230 South Broad. Good to know! But you're right, maybe they were cutting at 230 South Broad. The memory does play tricks over the years. I'll ask Sam Reed next time I see him.

Mike, do you know who played that terrific Trumpet backround on Sheron Ivy`s "I Need You"? I know that the Dreamlovers did the back-round doo-wop for him, but that Trumpet was a killer! Some body told me it was Harry James, who did it for $300 ,since he was friends with one of the Studio execs.But that can`t be true, can it?

The Geator's on WVLT (aka Cruisin 92.1) every weekday afternoon. I'm not sure if you get it in Philly though. I was working in the Philly outskirts of NJ this summer and it came in there, but barely.

The finger snappin TYMES were backing him up. If Hyski wrote it, his name would be on the label, no? I`ll tell you this Hy played the hell out of it from late `62 until he died so you never know. Maybe they gave him some of the publishing rights. He broke the record in Philly. of course, the Geator played it too and later, Mr. Warmth, Harvey Holiday. LOL
