Lee Dewyze attended an alternative high school but states that music and his teachers were his inspiration to go back to his studies. Before Idol, DeWyze worked as a paint salesclerk. His musical influences include Cat Stevens, Eric Clapton, Ben Harper, and Simon & Garfunkel.
DeWyze's career began when he was 16 or 17, after he met Louis Svitek, owner of WuLi Records, and Ryan McGuire of the Virginia Gentlemen. Lee DeWyze auditioned in Chicago for the ninth season of American Idol with the song "Ain't No Sunshine", which was also covered by Kris Allen. During Hollywood week, his group included Aaron Kelly and Crystal Bowersox, who all made it into the Top 24. During the first week, he performed "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol, which was praised by Simon Cowell. The next week he sang "Lips of an Angel", which did not get the same response as his first performance but was good enough to get him into the top 16. His third song, "Fireflies", came as a surprise and was generally liked by the viewers, critics, and the judges.
After making it to the Top 12, DeWyze performed Beast of Burden during The Rolling Stones week. For the Top 11's theme, Billboard #1 Hits, DeWyze performed The Letter by the The Box Tops. The following week DeWyze performed Treat Her Like a Lady impressing mentor Usher and all four judges including Cowell who said that "This is the night that your life may have changed forever." For the Top 9 week Lee performed Hey Jude by The Beatles. His closest friend is his fellow roomate, Andrew Garcia.

And my nights feel short
And I think I'm tired
But I'm not quite sure
And this movie sucks
And my head feels numb
Though it's light outside
Can't wait for the night to come
All my days feel long
And my nights feel short
And I think I'm tired
But I'm not quite sure
And this movie sucks
And my head feels numb
Though it's light outside
Can't wait for the night to come
For a while there I was in your
Just one last night to be confused
From out the center of this thing I'm in
But don't get tired, it just starts again
All my days feel long
And my nights feel short
And I think I'm tired
But I'm not quite sure
And this movie sucks
And my head feels numb
Though it's light outside
Can't wait for the night to come
That's when the witches and the ghosts appear
To show you everything is crystal clear
They told me things I know I won't forget
Can someone tell me is it nightfall yet?
All my days feel long
And my nights feel short
And I think I'm tired
But I'm not quite sure
And this movie sucks
And my head feels numb
Though it's light outside
Can't wait for the night to come
All my days feel long
And my nights feel short
And I think I'm tired
But I'm not quite sure
And this movie sucks
And my head feels numb
Though it's light outside
Can't wait for the night to come
The lyrics to Night And Day by Lee DeWyze convey a sense of restlessness and discomfort with the current state of things. The repetition of the lines "All my days feel long, and my nights feel short, and I think I'm tired, but I'm not quite sure" highlights the singer's confusion and dissatisfaction with their daily routine. The mention of a "movie sucks" and a "numb" head suggests a desire for stimulation and engagement that feels absent from their current circumstances. The repeated refrain of "Can't wait for the night to come" indicates a hope for relief or release that comes with the darkness.
The bridge of the song offers a moment of clarity and perspective in the midst of this restlessness. The singer reflects on a past relationship or experience where they felt confused but ultimately grew from it. The line "just one last night to be confused" suggests a desire for closure or resolution, and the phrase "from out the center of this thing I'm in" speaks to the feeling of being at the center of a confusing situation. However, the bridge ends with a warning to not get tired, implying that the cycle of confusion and growth will continue.
The final verse introduces a supernatural element with the mention of "witches and ghosts." This can be interpreted as a metaphor for the unexpected and mysterious moments that can offer clarity or guidance amidst confusion. The lines "They told me things I know I won't forget, can someone tell me is it nightfall yet?" suggest a desire to both hold onto and move past these moments of insight. Overall, Night And Day is a song that captures the complexity of longing for change and growth while being unsure of what form that change should take.

It's weird. It feels like just yesterday I saw this in my subscriptions feed as a new song. So much has changed, and so much is the same.
It's funny how life happens.
