They were formed in May 1996 by lead vocalist/guitarist Elvis Cortez. Cortez formed his own label, Smelvis Records, to release Left Alone's records, and has since expanded the label to include numerous other underground bands. Cortez was also the owner of the PCH Club in Wilmington, which is now defunct. Left Alone's music has ska influences, and the band is notable for adhering to a do it yourself ethic, by avoiding major labels, booking their own tours, and making their own merchandise.

After releasing numerous demos, splits, and EPs, Left Alone released their first full-length, Streets of Wilmington, in 2002. A year later, the band compiled their earlier, out-of-print recordings on the anthology Left Alone: 1996-2000. In 2003, Cortez went on the Warped Tour as a roadie. After Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman heard Left Alone's music, he chose the band to be the Warped Tour BBQ band for the 2004 tour. The band were invited back to be the BBQ band for the 2005 tour. While on the Warped Tour, Tim Armstrong of Rancid heard Left Alone's 2004 album, Lonely Starts & Broken Hearts. Armstrong signed the band to his label, Hellcat Records, and re-released Lonely Starts & Broken Hearts. The band released their third full-length album, Dead American Radio, on August 8, 2006, which features guest appearances from Tim Armstrong and Patricia Day of the Horrorpops.

The band released their self-titled album on April 7, 2009.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Day By Day" by Left Alone tell a story of a musician who's been on the road for the past seven years, never considering going home. He has lost a lot along the way but the few people who have stayed have made up for it. He has been feeling lonely all his life but he's trying to make his way back to someone who seems to be the love of his life. Last month my ex-girlfriend walked out of my life with my ex-bestfriend. We just bought a house 6 months ago in a new city, 4 hours away from any family or friends. I'm taking care of it on my own now and I've been reading a lot of books on stoicism and more recently started listening to the David Goggin's book "Can't hurt me". (Highly recommend for Cole's viewers). I wanted to say that happiness is a choice you have to make everyday irregardless of the external forces you are being subjected to. You have it within yourself to be that person you dream of being. End everyday by truly saying "I did well, I had a good day." Then each good day will become each good week, and each good week, will become each good year, until eventually you can say you have a good life.

Literally same thing just happened to me, my ex girlfriend cheated on me, and I’m in a town where I live 3 hours away from my family and friends. Just got my own place and I’m just learning how to deal with being alone, sometimes it’s hard but it feels good because I don’t have to deal with stress, a toxic relationship, I can go wherever I want to go and do whatever I want to do. I’ve been teaching myself how to cook, my ex girlfriend never cleaned so everyday I clean up my apartment and just take care of myself more now. @no youtube name Yes, you make a good point; it's "not healthy for many people" to be alone 24/7. I feel those peeps are extroverts who draw their energy & sense of purpose from others but feel free to counter my opinion.
I happen to an incurable introvert (as most writers naturally are) & simply cannot pay enough attention to a man or a pet to sustain a relationship with either. That's just me, & that's ok.
But clingy peeps are clingy precisely because they feel an incessant void within themselves, one they look to others to fill. Clingers don't need you "out of pure love" because they do not (yet) love themselves enough to not NEED you (to complete them); what they do is drain your energy, deplete your time, use you as a sounding board for all that is 'wrong' in their own lives, talking AT you rather than TO or WITH you, seeking distractions from themselves. I've met many a clinger so I see the patterns. They have many deep-seated fears, most of which they're not even conscious of.
I want to be in the company of a happy, self-assured, whole person (when I'm in the mood for another's company)--someone who doesn't clip my wings but rather strengthens them...someone who inspires me to connect ever deeper with my own Truth. Ultimately, all roads lead Home to one's true Self.

Being alone can be dangerous for me, because I suffer from depression. I realized, I was always happy when I had a girlfriend because it distracted me from my own internal thoughts. But, I find that being alone gives me a chance to improve myself, always learning from past mistakes. Since ending things with my last girlfriend a few months ago, I feel like the heartbreak that stemmed from that has really allowed me to improve a lot of things in my life, allowing me to grow into a better person. I don't regret anything in life. I see everything as a learning experience.

I hated being alone, but during this pandemic there are times that i had to be alone for more than two weeks at a time. One important thing I learned during that time is: you cannot truly love a friend or any person before you can accept being alone. Before the pandemic, I hang out with people everyday; I thought I loved them as friends, but I found I really just used them to not be bored or even to get attention. I did not respect the people I hanged out with, and I didn’t really enjoy the times I spent with some people. Now that I am completely alone and accepted that I am alone, I found myself only going out when I love them as friends as people. And I, in turn, felt respected in a deep way from them because they felt that I simply like them as people and not because I wanted to party or get attention. This actually happen more than you think, most people that I look at have this problem.

To be honest, since quarantine it’s been hard to really understand why I kept to myself even more. I struggled and still kinda struggle with being single and being alone, but I’m starting to realize that putting time into the things I live is supremely better than being popular or going out all the time. I used to have a close friend group in high school and we all drifted apart after graduating. I've learned over these last few years trying to force everyone to get together and failing that it's best to get comfortable with yourself and not trying to be with other people. I've lost so many people in my life especially this past year, I mind my own business. I've become a lot more selfish because I used to be a very selfless person. The reality is I'm 100% okay with being alone. I've never struggled with it because I've gotten to see what humans with hate and selfishness are capable of. It gives you perspective. I don't miss anyone and I love it. Having your own path, building positivity and working towards it is what counts. It took me a long time to learn this but I'm glad I finally did learn it. Especially with overprotective parents. Know the difference between losing people and making time for yourself. Being alone is the best thing that you can do to get ready for the next stages of life. You learn to love yourself, spend time with yourself and do productive things you like. Trying to get into a relationship just because you don’t wanna be lonely is a big mistake. I‘m 27 years old and most of my life I did everything by myself not relying on a relationship and now that I‘m married and I have a lady just as mentally mature as I am makes me feel so happy that I made the right choice. It’s so important that you’re consistently addressing this topic for the loners gang out here. I relate to everything you said. I have few but really good friends, but they’re all in different cities and countries so i haven’t been able to meet them in person with the pandemic. We text everyday but that’s just not the same, so i’ve been feeling lonely at times. I had to move back to my hometown after losing my job in another country and i don’t have anyone here, and i’m sure many others can relate. Focusing on myself has been soo useful to keep feeling accomplished and productive. I’ve been cooking a lot, reading a lot, going out alone or with my family, enjoying my time with my pets, exercising so much that i pulled a calf lol. Regardless of the rough situation, i’ve never felt more confident. To be comfortable with our own company and to not need external validation/attention is the most powerful achievement. Sending a hug/a pat/peace fingers/whatever to anyone out there feeling a little lost. You’re never alone in feeling lonely. Be your biggest fan. ✌🏻

I just turned 24 on November 10th. Watching this video has opened my mind and I recently became a Cole follower. Cole you are honestly an inspiration to many of us young men from what I have notice. i dropped out of school and lost all of my friends, I began to fell lonely after a few months and I had the mindset that I needed lots of friends to feel happy in life and go out with them. After watching a few YouTube videos it actually helped me a lot. I was “lucky” enough to be in a relationship with my ex during pandemic. I was 5,5 years with her and spend almost 9 years in relationships. I realise the answer is not to drink, not fill the gap with friends, not to eat unhealthy and not getting busy. Its just me, my dog and me. It’s scary at times, it’s sad even more often but I finally think a bit more clear. I have times when i’m alone and just happy and I finally get to finish projects I tried to finish years ago. I know learning something is hard but always worth it, learning to be alone is hard. But I started meditation, working out, gardening, cooking healthy for ME, slowly starting to study and I’m just a bit proud of myself - I thought the love of my life left me and first I was jealous of her. She hangs out with loads of friends but then I realised we are both introverted and I never tried being alone after a breakup - and I never found relieve before. This time it doesn’t matter how great she was, I slowly start to see the love of my life is me. Thanks for your video’s and positivity.

Don't ever expect anyone else to complete you, such as a girlfriend. Too many people go about this sort of thing in the wrong mindset, thinking that they need someone else in order to be happy. You must first love yourself, upon which everything else will fall into place.

Man thank you for articulating things in my head out loud I would never be able to organize and present like this. I have been traveling alone for months and kinda felt like I was going nutty from it even though I am an introvert and love being alone. haven't seen anyone but a grocery clerk in a minuuuuute but I've settled into it and now i'm just grateful to have all this time to invest all my energy in myself. And also when you cook alone you get to eat it all too 😍 i don't mind. it's nice to vegetate and consume content but you're right I feel more fulfilled when i create something in my solitude

A few month ago I (23) broke up with my boyfriend. We’ve been together for 6 years. When we started dating I didn’t know how important his words would be for me one day. At the beginning he told me that I have to be happy on my own and just with myself because otherwise the relationship could not work. And that this relationship is a safespace to grow as a person. So all these years we had a live together but at the same time I lived my live alone. I loved being alone and i loved being with him. Now after the breakup I realised how important that is because I could process the breakup much better and it’s not like I lost who I am. There is so much stuff I enjoy alone, things I don’t even want to to with somebody else and now that I am talking to a lot more new people I realised how rare this is in my age group... the looks people gave me when I told them that I go for four hour long hikes alone, searching for a nice place and fall asleep in the forest :D

I grew up very isolated so I didn’t know this wasn’t normal. I did EVERYTHING by myself and now I struggle being around people sometimes especially groups. Not sure if I woulda preferred it the other way around or not but I absolutely love being by myself, has made me hyper introspective and very aware of my mental state and emotions.

The more I watch your videos, the more I feel connected to you. We've got way more similarities than I originally thought, especially since last year I also moved into my first apartment ALONE(my brother and I previously roomed together, but he moved out of state with his girlfriend), and I absolutely ADOREEEE it! I also realized how utterly difficult it is to see people, but one other thing I've noticed is that I am mostly the one going out of my way to try to see them, but they're always "busy" - they've got spouses, pets & children - things I do not have, and it is such an empowering feeling. It's just I detest how it always seems like it's on THEIR terms to hang out with me, but they don't exert the effort that I do to see them. And I get it - people have shit to do, as do I, and I do NOT expect to see people every single week or every single month. I expect EVERY NOW & AGAIN, but I literally can't even get that. Period. Friends have moved out of state & didn't even bother to tell me until after the fact.. MONTHS later. Same for a friend who got married - didn't tell me till 'after' it happened.

So I feel you, Cole. I truly do. Thankfully I've been the best I've ever been mentally this year, as I've been learning new things, paying mind to proper emotional & mental regulation, eating healthy, enforcing positive discipline & shattering bad habits in favour of GOOD habits, cooking WAY MORE, working out consistently as fuck(have not missed a day this month & I don't plan to), going back to school this fall to major in business & currently in the middle of a gigantic transition from ten years of retail to finance & insurance, as I am shooting for my state license atm.

You are an inspiration, and I'm thrilled to have found your channel!

The premise of this video will most likely be my entire life. No child, not married, and with how crazy the world is today, the future isn't looking great to change those things. We came in this world alone. We leave this world alone. We really all need to take care of ourselves. Cant make people like you, or want to stay with you through life. It amazes me that kind, caring, and loving people are some of the loneliness in the world. Ever see how homeless people are more caring and giving then the wealthy who have a lot more to give.

Cole, I am socially awkward at work because in my personal life there are certain steps I am trying to climb which when I trip on them I fall into so much social anxiety and I act like I'm so small and other people notice it. It really is one of the best ways to elevate your mood, your sense of self-worth, and enjoy how you're spending your time. I also find that cleaning is one of those meditative and soothing activities that is another form of self-care.
Such a thrill to watch these awesome recipe videos and get busy recreating them. You're right about that feeling of accomplishment. It's a natural high. Plus, the food is so much healthier and cleaner when you know what ingredients you're using. Tastes better, too.

Art has really saved my sanity during confinement. I still really struggle with accepting being alone, but it’s the one (productive and healthy) thing that gives me a sense of progress. I have a feeling I’m going to need to rewatch this a few times, great vid.

Ive been living like that for 2 years. Cooking for myself, going to gym, learning guitar,playing football,travel, everything alone and i think this was the worst time of my life and i dont even want to remember it. Now i connected with old friends from school, we travel and do fun things together and i finally feel like im alive.

My parents passed away a few years ago and now I live alone at the age of 35. It is so lonely, overwhelmed and it is hard, i don't know how to be happy living alone. Still learning how to be happy alone. Yes but working out at home does make me happy. And I volunteer at this place from home which keeps me occupied. So I am trying to get used to living alone. I just wanted to thank you for your content. In the last couple days I came through one of your videos looking for something that distract me (and perhaps help me). I recently had a rupture of 8+ years of marriage and the feelings and emotions I've gone through had make me felt like I'm on a roller coaster.

I had a breakup from a 3 year long relationship and started living on my own for the first time ever in my life and it's been almost 4 months. I live abroad so at first it was really difficult not to be scared every time I wake up and go to bed. Now I find myself much more comfortable being on my own and being fully myself. I totally agree with your points in this video. There's no better way you get to know yourself than being alone, doing things on your own and learning things about yourself. If anyone here is afraid of being alone especially after a breakup, trust me, you'll one day find it fun to be on your own and there'll be a significant payoff which is a better version of yourself. Look forward to that.

Being alone is fine, but animals NEED intimacy with at least 1 person. Otherwise they will get extremely depressed. You need someone to hug no matter what to be mentally sane. Even if its just a pet.

A couple years ago I was alone basically 24/7. I went to school and went home and was by myself all day mostly. I would be alone but I was fine with it. In the past 6 months I’ve been dreading everyday especially when I’m alone. I don’t know how my mindset changed and what caused it but I’m struggling to fix myself because I don’t have a clue where to start or what to do.

Love these types of videos because a lot of people have an unhealthy dependency towards being with people... on the opposite spectrum some introverts want to be so alone they forget what human interaction even is which is just horrible for when they actually have to go out and find work opportunities, or find a friend, or girl, etc. I've found myself on both far sides at different points in my life.

Balance is key my friends. You dont have befriend everybody. Just dont shoe everyone out your way.

Being alone is good, but I had the opposite problem. I was too "stoic" growing up and pushed people away. I wasn't a loser/nerd, I was popular, but I hated being around people.

It's self defeating to be alone all the time. And impossible. You need to work on yourself just enough not to depend on others. But atomization causes other mental issues.

I definetly can relate to the video, I litreally felt like I found myself since the pandemic started. Lost 14kg because I was fat. what you said with the healthy eating habit is definetly true!!!(btw everyone can cook! Just try it out!) And I am so much more confident since I lost weight and in general life is very kind to me, kinda giving me rewards for what I did(wrote my resume and got a job, got into the writing hobby and am just living life).

I've always been a loner and had never been unhappy about it. Though later in my teen years my mother used to urge me to meet friends, even though she knew I had none. She would urge me so badly, that I felt really really unhappy.
Fast-forward a few years and I move away for university and didn't find friends. I felt really unhappy but not because I was alone. Because of how other people looked at me - shocked, disgusted, smilingly looking down on me and almost patting my head saying "ahh everything will be alright. You will find friends one day" as if I have to have friends. As if that makes me less valuable (to them I probably was/am).
The past years I've been very "lonely" because I just don't get along with most people. I don't like meeting people all the time and 24/7 being available through chat. I don't want to socialize as much as others. Just recently I realized that I am not lonely. It's just that my unhappiness comes from the urge to live for other people. To make them approve of me. To stop them from treating me that way and acting as if I am broken.

I love being alone. I love taking journeys all by myself. Yes 24/7/365 I'm fine being alone. Sometimes company is nice but it's not a necessity for me to be happy. Often, it is rather the opposite. I'd rather be alone than have bad company.

I decided to keep my head down and focus on myself just do things that make me feel good. Cannot recommend enough. Work-out, cook for self, do things you can improve on (tennis), do things your younger self used to enjoy (reading). Worked wonders!!

I do the rosary, I read, I watch Christian videos. And they are all informative. But you were right to do all of those other things I do them with much of my alone time. Funny thing is that I used to be happy being alone but since my country has active conscription by the time I hit 19 the military took me and for a long time I got used to be around other people- now that I am a college student and living in a different country- the struggle of being alone is real.
