Swords
Leftfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dangers in every corner
I have become pure water
I can identify, I close my eyes

I wear my sword at my side
I wear my sword at my side

Cleanse me deep in the fire
I have become pure water

I wear my sword at my side
I wear my sword at my side

I wear my sword at my side
I wear my sword at my side

I have become pure water

I have become pure water
I have become pure water

Overall Meaning

The song Swords by Leftfield is a powerful reflection on the dangers that lurk around, and how the singer has transformed himself into "pure water". The opening lines "Dangers in every corner" set the tone for the song, as the singer highlights how he has become acutely aware of the perils that surround him. In the second line, we hear of the singer's transformation, as he has become "pure water". This could be interpreted in a number of ways. Water is a symbol of purity and cleansing, so the singer may be suggesting that he has purified himself, and is now untainted by the dangers around him. Alternatively, water also takes the shape of its surroundings, so the singer may be suggesting that he has learnt to adapt to the dangers, and move fluidly through them.

The singer also speaks of his ability to identify the dangers, and he closes his eyes as if to focus more intently on his surroundings. This suggests a heightened sense of awareness, and readiness to tackle any dangers that come his way. The repeated line "I wear my sword at my side" serves as a reminder that the singer is ready to fight at any moment. The "sword" could be a metaphor for a number of things - it could represent strength and power, or perhaps it's a symbol of the singer's determination and resilience.

The final lines "Cleanse me deep in the fire / I have become pure water" could be taken to mean that the singer has gone through some sort of baptism of fire and has come out stronger and purer as a result. It's a fitting end to a song that presents a strong sense of inner strength and resilience.

I've heard this song probably 100 times and it gets better ever time I hear it. That is Leftfield, they have unbelievable lasting power that I really could only say probably say about 5 other acts out there. Anyway, I've hard this song loads and this is just now the first time I've ever seen the video, and this is probably the best video I've ever seen, no bullshit.
