Girls
Lefty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Girls hit back
When you least expect
Where you most regret it
Girls they don't understand
Why I love my friends
More than them

I don't mean to say it but somebody
Needs to put an end to them
I don't mean to say it but somebody
Needs to put an end to girls

Girls decorate the house
With flowers and cows
And pictures of the family
Girls think their misunderstood
But I know goddamned well
All the things they do
They do to nerve me

They'll never understand
Wish I didn't need them

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Lefty's song "Girls" paint a picture of a complicated and difficult relationship between the singer and the women in his life. He seems to have a deep frustration with them, both with their actions and with his own feelings towards them. The opening lines speak of how girls will "hit back" at unexpected moments, and in ways that leave the singer regretful. This sets a tone for the rest of the song - that the singer sees women as unpredictable and difficult to understand.

The second verse continues this theme, with the singer suggesting that women are overly emotional and prone to misunderstandings. He takes issue with their decorating choices and seems to resent the things they do to try and make him happy. Ultimately, he concludes that he wishes he didn't need the women in his life, although he doesn't explain why he feels this way.

Lefty's lyrics are striking in their honesty and raw emotion. They give voice to a frustration that many people may feel in complicated relationships, whether with romantic partners or family members. The song is both relatable and uncomfortable, challenging listeners to think about their own relationships and the dynamics at play within them.

Probably the most underrated song of the last 2 millennia.

They entered the scene at the same time as New Found Glory and sound incredibly similar. One signed to Interscope the other to MCA. At the time another band signed to MCA was being thrust down everyone's throat on MTV and the like and had blown up to the top of the media world... Blink 182. A similar band could ride the rapids with them and suck in some of that success and as it turns out one band blew up and the other didn't. Life is a bitch sometimes.

Saw these guys open up for Goldfinger and Mest at the Key club in LA back in 2000. Pop punk galore! Not bad for my first show. I was 13.

Discovered this on Sugar & Spice soundtrack. Such a great song, reminds me why I used to be a fan of California rock.

Alone of the best of poppunk.

Really thought these guys and Trippin' Daisy were gonna rule the world, but they still rock mine on a pretty regular basis. (I saw a band on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk main stage called Tripyn Lefti, and they played this one and I Gotta Girl and were then bum-rushed outta there 'cause I guess they weren't supposed to be there, they'd just snuck in and set up. And now Metallica were waiting to go on, and getting impatient. I heard Lars whine about how tiny the buffet's sandwich bread was. Later I spotted James at Arby's and just had to gush, Gee I'm glad you guys reunited and are touring again. How's Manchester? Man, isn't life a gas?!

Putting my two cents on this song since it keeps circling in my mind along with the band itself, but it bums me out that Lefty had potential with songs like "Takes So Long", "Everything" (which comes from the same album as "Girls"), and "Up 'til Now". However, they decided to rely on an ultimately corny song about girls as their major single instead of the aggressive, aforementioned song, "Everything", which probably would've done much better with a casual audience at least.

Things didn't work out in the end since it seems like Interscope let them go in 2001 or sometime shortly after as they never released anything under them again. To make things even more ironic or sad or whatever, in an interview they said they would record a song called "Boys", basically a reflection of this song, for their next album and that never came to be. I can only wonder what could've been of this band if they never recorded this song or just changed up the content of the lyrics to it and where they would be nowadays...
