Who Did That to You?
Legend John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now I’m not afraid to do the Lords work,
You say vengeance is his, but Imma do it first.
I’m gonna handle my business in the name of the law.

Now if he made you cry, oh, I gotta know,
If he’s not ready to die, he best prepare for it.
My judgement’s divine, I'll tell you who you can call,
You can call.

You better call the police, call the coroner,
Call up your priest, have him warn ya.
Walk in no peace when I find that fool
Who did that to you, yeah,
Who did that to you, my baby,
Who did that to you,
Gotta find that fool who did that to you.

Now I don’t take pleasure in a man’s pain,
But my wrath will come down like the cold rain.
And there won’t be no shelter, no place you can go.
It's time to put your hands up, time for surrender,
I’m a vigilante, my law’s defender,
You’re a wanted man, here everybody knows.

You better call the police, call the coroner,
Call up your priest, have him warn ya.
Won't be no peace when I find that fool
Who did that to you, yeah,
Who did that to you, my baby,
Who did that to you,
Gotta find that fool who did that to you.

Now he’ll keep on running, but I’m closing near,
I'll hunt him down, take ability,
If you see me coming near, who you gonna call?

You better call the police, call the coroner,
Call up your priest, have him warn ya.
Won't be no peace when I find that fool
You better call the doctor, call the lawyer,
I chase ‘em all the way to California,

Get my best trying to find that fool
Who did that to you

Overall Meaning

In the song "Who Did That to You?" by Legend John, the lyrics describe a vigilante seeking justice for someone who has been wronged. The singer is not afraid to take matters into his own hands, even if it means enacting vengeance before the Lord. He will handle his business "in the name of the law" and will not take pleasure in a man's pain. However, he will not stop until he finds the culprit who made the person he cares about cry.

The lyrics are full of powerful imagery, painting a picture of a relentless, unstoppable force. The singer's wrath is compared to cold rain with "no shelter", and the wanted man cannot run forever because the singer is "closing near." The chorus urges the wronged party to call the police, the coroner, and the priest. To be warned, because there will be no peace until the guilty party is caught. The singer even urges the wronged party to call a doctor or a lawyer because he will chase the perpetrator all the way to California to exact justice.

A few possible interpretations of the song could be a commentary on the sometimes flawed or inefficient justice system, where certain crimes may go unpunished or the punishment is inadequate. It could also speak to the human need for justice, particularly in the face of harm caused to loved ones.

Sir you make a good point.
And at any other time, I would completely agree with you.
But this was a fictional account where the racist/oppressors literally got their
Buts kicked! That's what I found absolutely hilarious!
This scene in the movie was not glorifying the kkk, but showed what most decent people,
wished had happened to the kkk during and after slavery.

Hopefully one day they will see the error of their ways

God bless and stay safe and healthy.
Peace.
