@MAX depends on what you consider native personally I prefer to use the name First Nations or amerindian for most tribes predating European colonialism as I think it works better for one reason say a family it's been here for 300 years and they have known no other home but the Americas does it make more sense to refer to them as a European or as native to the place they have lived all their lives

Leifur heppni Eiríksson - Leif the lucky (980-1020) was born in Iceland. Leifur was a son of Eiríkur rauði – Eric the red and is wife Þórhildur – Thorhild. Eric saild from Norway to Iceland and settled down for few years.
With his parents and two brothers Þorvaldur and Þorsteinn, Leif sailed from Iceland to Greenland.
Around 1000 he sailed from Greenland to Helluland/Baffinsland. Then to Markland/Labrador and Vínland/Newfoundland (island)

The norse settlement in newfoundland was discovered in the 60s. I was in 5th grade in 2002 and they where still teaching columbus, 2 years later in 7th grade was the first time id ever heard of erikson.

I'm American and although most people I know are aware that Leif Eriksson was first, we do still celebrate Columbus' Day in the US. I'm pretty sure it's a federal holiday, schools and banks and the like are all closed for it. I've only been to Canada twice though, so I can't say whether or not they celebrate an Eriksson day. That'd be cool if they did, though.

No, we don't, and that's even less so when it comes to the Native American communities. Also, Lief wasn't first either. Not even close because just as when Lief was about to explore Newfoundland for the first time, over on the other side of the continent, the Polynesians were already doing trade with the West coast Native Americans and my have been doing so for at least a hundred years before that. Before Columbus, yes, but far, far from being "first".

I have to give props to you for pronouncing Leif Eriksson correctly. Most non-Scandinavian speakers usually pronounces Leif, Leaf instead, which is wrong.

EDIT: Yeah you are pronouncing everything correctly, are the narrator Norwegian with a great english accent or English with a great Norwegian accent? Sounds Norwegian when pronouncing Leif Eriksson and Vinland.

We were taught about Leif Erikson...even in the late 70s/early 80s...but he didn't stay...so Columbus was still treated as though he actually did something...🤔🤷‍♂️

@Lucas G The St. Lawrence is a river, from Lake Ontario to its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean, and it gets very cold there in winter. The whole system had to be artificially widened so ocean-going ships could make it to and from Minnesota.

Imagine if Scandanavia had continued it's attempts to establish colonies past Greenland. It would've been very difficult, but we could've had colonies in the Americas perhaps 400+ years earlier, and since there wasn't THAT big of a technological gap yet, the natives could've adopted European technology and adapted it. Albeit diseases would still be a big issue.

The reason why we prefer Columbus over Eriksson is because the continents didn’t know about each other before Columbus at least Western Europe didn’t know and neither did the Middle East.

@Joseph Biondi I did once or twice, but exiting in Bay Ridge gave me a good stretch up the Marathon route on Fourth Ave and I'd pass a convenience store where I could buy something to drink. The highlight of the run was going under the bridge that would comprise the first two miles of the race.

@Joseph Biondi I lived in Midwood at the time. I'd run the length of Kings Highway, Bay Parkway to the water, Belt Parkway footpath past the Verrazano Bridge til it ended, then to Fourth Ave where I'd see the park. I moved to Florida last August.

The Vikings often adopted other cultural beliefs into their own which made them more progressive than most at the time. There's a story about how Erik actually funded a church to be built in Greenland for his son (Brattahlid).

At least Columbus' discovery was what led to the massive colonization of the continent by the europeans. The Norse never established foothold there for long and no other europeans were interested to colonize it for centuries aftewards that we know of. It was still thanks (heheh) to Columbus that America is a thing now.

"The way you heard it"... his birthplace wasn't certainly known, the reason scholars refer to him as a Norseman from Iceland is because he had a Norse family from Iceland, and Norse vikings from Iceland settled in Greenland after Erik the Red settled there. PS: Iceland and Greenland were NOT part of Norway at that time, they were Norse settlements and their own countries. Read about the Icelandic commonwealth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_Commonwealth), while Greenland was settled by Norsemen from Iceland, where Erik the Red chose to rule. "First come, first served".

Are you sure? The way I heard it is that Eric The Red went from Western Norway to Iceland and then to Greenland before having Leif. Which would mean that Leif is from Greenland (Even though both Iceland and Greenland was then part of Norway during its time)

It was a thing. Iceland was independent being called the Icelandic commonwealth or "þjóðveldið Ísland". Icelanders at the time actually started to consider themselves different from Norwegians. ((Seeing as they mixed with the celtic slaves))

The reason why we say that Columbus discovered America is that, until then, all previous visitors had no notion of cosmography and didn’t understand where they had arrived. The Vikings might have arrived in New Foundland & further but they didn’t understand that was another continent nor did they reveal their finding to the rest of the World. Before you jump in to say that Columbus confused America with Asia you should be aware that it was his cartographer, Juan de la Cosa (sorry, not Vespucci, he learned this from de la Cosa) who realized that the new lands were indeed another continent, a fact that Columbus had to grudgingly accept in the end because all his promises he had made to the Crown and investors could not be honored.

Actually they did know it was another continent unlike Columbus they never mistaked it for Asia or any other place like Columbus.
It's why they called it Vinland cause they did actually know it was another continent.
They did tell the other nordic people about it but unlike the Spanish they didn't try to take over the continent
