Surfin' USA
Leif Garrett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If everybody had an ocean
Across the U.S.A.
Then everybody'd be surfin'
Like California.
You'd see them wearin' their baggies
Huarachi sandals, too.
A bushy, bushy blonde hairdo,
Surfin' U.S.A.

You'll catch 'em surfin' at Del Mar,
Ventura County Line.
Santa Cruz and Tressels,
Australia's Narabine.
All over Manhattan and down Doheny way.
Everybody's gone surfin',
Surfin' U.S.A.

We'll all be plannin' out a route
We're gonna take real soon.
We're waxin' down our surfboards
We can't wait for June.
We'll all be gone for the summer,
We're on safari to stay.
Tell the teacher we're surfin',
Surfin' U.S.A.

At Haggarty's and Swami's,
Pacific Palisades,
San Onofre and Sunset,
Redondo Beach, L.A.
All over La Jolla and Waiamea Bay.

Everybody's gone surfin',
Surfin' U.S.A.

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of the song Surfin' USA by Leif Garrett is an invitation to travel across the United States and join the surf culture. The lyrics suggest that there should be an ocean accessible to everyone, and if that were the case, then all would be surfing like they do in California. The people are characterized as wearing baggies and Huarachi sandals while sporting a bushy, bushy blonde hairdo, which is synonymous with the surf culture of California. The line "Surfin' U.S.A." is repeated several times as if to reiterate that surfing is now a national sport that everyone can participate in regardless of their location.

The second stanza of the song is an invitation for everyone to join in the surfing culture during the summer. They plan to go on safari by traversing the United States and stopping at various surfing spots along the way. They wax their surfboards in anticipation of the warm weather coming in June. The song mentions several specific surfing locations in Southern California, such as Del Mar, Ventura County Line, Santa Cruz, Tressels, and Manhattan Beach, but it also references surfing locations outside of California like Narabine in Australia. The song concludes by mentioning other popular surf spots like Haggarty's and Swami's in Pacific Palisades, San Onofre, Sunset, Redondo Beach, L.A., La Jolla, and Waiamea Bay.
