'Round Midnight
Leif Shires Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad

Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

In the first stanza of Leif Shires's song 'Round Midnight, he describes how he usually feels okay until the evening sets in, after which he feels pretty down. The supper time is especially painful for him as the memories with his loved one come back to him. The memories that make him feel so much sadness start 'round midnight, making it almost impossible for him to shake off the feelings of longing and heartbreak. In the second verse, Shires talks about how these midnight memories don't leave his mind and how he cannot stand them since they only remind him of the times he spent with his beloved. He feels lost without his loved one and hopes he will soon return to him. He wonders if their argument signifies the end of their relationship. In the end, he hopes for his loved one's safe return and that their love stays safe and intact.
