Following the release of Country Strong, Meester took her music in a different direction away from pop and began collaborating with the band Check in the Dark on a more singer-songwriter style of music. The previously anticipated pop album was never released and in 2012 she embarked on a five-date tour with Check in the Dark that featured the new music live for the first time. In June 2012 Meester confirmed all songs had been recorded with Check in the Dark as a demo.
In September 2014 Meester announced the release of her debut album, Heartstrings, through her own record label, Hotly Wanting. The title track was available with pre-order; the album was released on October 28 2014. The music video for the title track was also released, one day later. All nine songs were written by Meester and produced by Jeff Trott. Heartstrings received generally positive reviews and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart upon release. From January to March 2015 she toured with Jeff Trott and the recording band members in support of the album, visiting nine cities in two weeks, including a residency at The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles.
Christmas
Leighton Meester Lyrics

I'm watching it fall
Lots of people around
Baby please come home
The church bells in town
All ringing in song
Full of happy sounds
Baby please come home
They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
I remember when are you were here
And all the fun we had last year
Pretty lights on the tree
I'm watching them shine
You should be here with me
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Come home come home
They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
I remember when are you were here
And all the fun we had last year
If there was a way
I'd hold back this tear
But it's Christmas day
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Come home come home
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Baby please come home
Come home come home
The lyrics to Leighton Meester's "Christmas" are a plea for a loved one to come home for the holidays. The singer is watching the snow fall and sees lots of people around, but feels that something is missing without the person they are calling for. The church bells are ringing, and everyone else seems to be in a happy mood, but the singer can't fully enjoy the holiday without their loved one. The singer fondly remembers spending Christmas with their loved one in the past and wishes they were here now to enjoy the present moment. Despite the festive decor and holiday cheer, the singer feels a sense of loneliness without their loved one, and the chorus is a repetitive plea for them to come home.
