She was discovered by the musical duo Rob'n'Raz when she placed second in the 1989 swedish rap championship. They liked her music and offered her a recording contract. Together with Rob'n'Raz she had her first hit in 1989 with the song "Got To Get" (#8 UK, #3 Germany).
During the first years of her career she had many chart-topping hits and her music was played all over Europe. She broke up with Rob'n'Raz and went on her own to Ibiza, where she was treated like a superstar and managed to set up concerts on her own. Her solo career started in 1991 with the single "Time" which she followed up with many other popular singles, such as her biggest hit "Open Sesame" (#23 UK, #5 Germany) and a cover version of the punk song "Ca plane pour moi" (#13 Germany). In 1993 she was the best selling female artist in Europe.
Leila K's wild lifestyle led her into trouble; her motto was "life is just a party". She did not make much money in 1994 and at the end of the year, she owed the Swedish tax collectors 122 000 SEK (about 17 000 USD).
In 1995 Leila K was back on the music scene with the hit single "Electric". She kept releasing new music until 1997, but since then nothing new has been released by her.
In 1998, Göran Olsson made a documentary about Leila K called Fuck you, fuck you very much. It shows the period surrounding her nomination for the 1996 Swedish Grammis awards, and confrontations with the swedish press due to fabricated stories.
In 2003, the newspaper Expressen reported that Leila K was living as a homeless person on the streets of Stockholm, having to steal in order to get food.
In 2004 she was reported as being in jail.
In 2005, the Swedish cartoonist Martin Kellerman conducted an interview with her for his own Comic book magazine Rocky.
In 2015 Leila K made a return to the stage at the Denniz Pop Awards, named after her former producer.

Never cost us more champagne di Leila K.
Slow motion in the way to all de pears a summerbreeze
Quinty's got the mic, mi-a Leila K, super trooper oman-a
Sambo-tall is their elector, and that's official: star
Long time noh seen that colored people won't get up
Get up and let di party begin
Pass di microphone, let me fling a little ting, yes
Mi super, mi super on di vibration
And me fly up on the stage, like mi super oman-a
Donwise and in a slower motion
Lady K-a bring da beat for colored people of this town
Inside your body move galaxic work
Slow Motion
Nobody call for kali
Slow Motion
Slow Motion
Now in each and every crowd the muffle fling a rub-a-dub
Making music like an afro-maniac or like a droid
Hypnotizing people like a star shine bright
With the early-in-the-morning noise, late at night
Warm up your body like a new pull-over
If you want we call the lot and call the call it fully improper
Reggae every day can call di world over
U see reggae every day can call di world over
Inside your body move galaxic work
Slow Motion
Nobody call for kali
Long time noh seen that colored people won't get up
So mi haffi bring damn water, Fiko fill up all di cup
Get up and let di party begin
Pass di microphone, let me fling a little ting, yes
Mi super, mi super on di vibration
And me fly up on the stage, like mi super oman-a
Donwise and in a slower motion
Lady K-a bring da beat for colored people of this town
The lyrics to Leila K.'s “Slow Motion” seem to celebrate the energy and spirit of a party. It starts off with a reference to “feisty man top of urgean,” which could mean a lively or spirited man dancing energetically. The lyrics then mention how long it's been since Leila K. has seen such energy and excitement at a party.
Leila K. then references herself and her collaborator, Quinty, on the microphone as they hype up the crowd. She mentions Sambo-tall as their “elector,” which could refer to a party organizer or promoter, emphasizing that this is a big, official event. The lyrics note that it took some effort to get people moving, and Leila had to bring water and fill up cups to get the party started.
The chorus talks about being in “slow motion” and celebrates the music that's making everyone move. The lyrics describe the crowd as “galactic” and “afro-maniac” and suggest that people are being hypnotized by the rhythm. The song ends with a call for everyone to keep dancing and enjoying the music.
