Musical Chairs
Lemon Demon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I walk around in squares.
Another round of musical chairs,
And maybe no one really cares about the way we walk.
The record stores are out of stock,
And all we want is bloody rock and roll.
And clearly this is not the way to go.
The ghost of Chairman Mao.
He had three money symbols on his brow.
And he will show the children how
To wear their cowboy boots,
Bowler hats and prison suits,
And watch while Neil Armstrong shoots the moon.
But he's never gonna get there by balloon. (Ooh.)
I thought you weren't allowed here,
I thought they crossed your name,
And that would be your only claim to fame.
Well it's a big fat crying shame,
The way you lost your touch.
The soapbox weighed a bit too much,
And all this talking feels like such a waste.
And now you've crossed the boundaries of good taste.
Your only option now's to be replaced.
In "Musical Chairs," Lemon Demon paints a picture of two individuals who are stuck in a cycle, walking around in shapes that don't quite fit. The metaphor of musical chairs evokes the image of people constantly shifting and changing their positions in search of something that will feel right but never finding it. The frustration with the cycle is further emphasized by the mention of music stores being sold out of rock and roll, a symbol of rebellion and liberation from societal norms. The singer seems to be saying that the way they're going about things is clearly not working, but no one seems to care or take notice.
The second verse takes a surreal turn with the appearance of the ghost of Chairman Mao. The use of Mao as a symbol of authoritarianism and oppression suggests that the singer feels trapped by larger societal structures. The references to cowboy boots, bowler hats, and prison suits suggest that Mao wants to strip individuals of their individuality and force them to conform to a certain look or style. The mention of Neil Armstrong shooting the moon further emphasizes the theme of exploration and breaking free from constraints. The mention of a balloon as a means of getting to the moon suggests that Mao's methods are outdated and impractical.
The final verse seems to be directed towards someone specific, with the singer mentioning that they thought this person wasn't allowed there and that they had crossed their name. The soapbox in this case can be interpreted as a platform for speaking out, but it's become too burdensome and ineffective. The mention of the person losing their touch and crossing boundaries of good taste suggests that they were once effective at getting their message across, but they've become stagnant and irrelevant. The final line, "Your only option now's to be replaced," seems to be a harsh rebuke towards the person, suggesting that they're no longer useful and should be discarded in favor of someone or something new.

I walk around in squares.
I'm trying to stay within the lines and play by the rules.
Another round of musical chairs,
Life is unpredictable and always changing, and we have to constantly adapt to keep up.
And maybe no one really cares about the way we walk.
We might feel like we're being judged constantly, but in reality, most people aren't paying attention.
The record stores are out of stock,
We're struggling to find the things we love and that give us joy in a world where they seem scarce.
And all we want is bloody rock and roll.
We crave something authentic and rebellious that speaks to our souls.

We're lost and unsure of what direction to take in our search for meaning and fulfillment.
I saw it in the mirror,
I had a moment of introspection and realized something about myself.
The ghost of Chairman Mao.
I saw a reflection of a powerful and oppressive figure from history.
He had three money symbols on his brow.
His greed and lust for power were evident in every aspect of his being.
And he will show the children how...
His influence and legacy continue to shape the world, especially when it comes to the younger generation.
To wear their cowboy boots, bowler hats, and prison suits,
He wants to control every aspect of people's lives, from what they wear to how they behave.

I thought you weren't allowed here,
I didn't expect to see you or for you to have access to this place or opportunity.
I thought they crossed your name,
I thought someone had deliberately excluded you from this situation or opportunity.
And that would be your only claim to fame.
You had nothing to offer or contribute beyond the fact that you were once banned or shunned from this place or opportunity.
Well, it's a big fat crying shame,
It's a terrible tragedy that things turned out this way.
The way you lost your touch.
You used to be skilled or talented in some way, but you've become rusty or lost your edge over time.
The soapbox weighed a bit too much,
You took on too many responsibilities or burdens and it became overwhelming.
And all this talking feels like such a waste.
You're using up precious time and energy without making any real progress or achieving anything of substance.
And now you've crossed the boundaries of good taste.
You've gone too far or made a mistake that is beyond repair and it's now impacting your reputation or relationships with others.
Your only option now's to be replaced.
You've hit rock bottom and the only way is up, but you need to make significant changes and start over.

I’ve started hearing the last part like a conversion
“I thought you weren’t allowed here, I thought they crossed your name”
“And that would be my only claim to fame”
“Well it's a big fat crying shame, The way you lost your touch.”
“The soapbox weighed a bit to much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”
“And all this talking feels like such a waste.”
“And now you've crossed the boundaries of good taste!”
“Your only option now's to be replaced.”
And the instrumental is them fighting.

okay so I created an Anime Story using this song. I'm not actually making this a thing, this is just for fun.
I'm not proof reading this so yeah.
A group of children invests a haunted house for fun, a Ghost named Chairman Mao appears. He takes on the aura of being friendly and trustworthy. He convinces the kids to play a game of Musical chairs with him. Once they finish the first game of musical chairs, they wanted to go home. The ghost smiles and says "You're not going home, you're never going home." The Ghost traps the children here, they force the children to wear Cowboy boots, Bowler Hats, and Prison suits. Prison Suits because they're Chairman Mao's prisoners/slaves (Whatever sounds better to you).
They are stuck here, forced to play Musical Chairs. The Ghost is nice enough to allow them to have breaks. Their break room is a white room with wooden floor boards and wooden bunk beds. That's all they have, they get feed 3 times a day. Given water 4 times a day. How long of a break is random.
Chairman Mao gets bored of normal Musical Chairs and decided to twist the game. He invites another ghost called Neil Armstrong.
Neil Armstrong sets up a Moon painted on wood. Neil Armstrong shoots the moon, It's their new symbol that the game is starting. But that isn't the twist.
He has new rules to the game of Musical Chairs.
1. Children shall not speak during the games or else they'll get shot by Neil.
2. Kicking, Shoving, Pushing, and Fighting for the chairs is allowed and is encouraged. (Though, the children don't do it much.)
3. Listen to Chairman Mao and obey at all times during the games, no matter what the order is. O B E Y
and more rules that are very unfair-- I would list them all, but I honestly don't want to sit here and think of all the rules just for this comment not many people are going to read.
our main character who we'll call Borealis and is a 12 year old girl, gets tired of all this crap is plans to escape. Chairman Mao gets suspicious of Borealis and makes a new rule.
"All Children who gets caught escaping will be killed as soon as possible. Children who report escaping children or children trying to escape will get a week break from Musical Chairs." This makes Borealis more stressed and hesitant to do stuff.
Borealis at some points gets everything ready and begins his escape plan. She's escaping with her best friend Anouk.
Anouk gets seperated from Borealis. Borealis stops the plan to look for them. However, she sees Neil Armstrong and Chairman Mao. They both begin floating towards Borealis. Borealis runs through the house and ends up in the living room.
The door to exit the house was right there, forgetting about Anouk temporarily she makes a break for the door.
Right before she reaches the door, it slams close and Neil appears infront of the door.
He says
"I thought you werent allowed here,
I thought they crossed your name,
And that would be your only claim to fame.
Well its a big fat crying shame,
The way you lost your touch.
The soapbox weighed a bit too much,
And all this talking feels like such a waste.
And now youve crossed the boundaries of good taste.
Borealis begs for forgiveness and promises to stay to play Musical Chairs forever in a desperate attempt to live.
Neil shakes his head.
"Your only option nows to be replaced." Neil reaches his arm out and shadow emerge from the floorboards.
Borealis turns around and runs, being chased by the Shadows. She notices Anouk down the hall in front of her, being held by Chairman Mao. Not held down-- Held by the hand.
"ANOUK? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? RUN!" Borealis screams. Anouk shakes her head, crying.
"I'm sorry! They promised that they'll let me go if I turn you in." She cried, very guilty.
"ANOUK!" She screams, not wanting to believe this.
Borealis gets caught by the shadows and dragged towards the shadow's source. She gets suffocated by the Shadows and dies.
As promised, Anouk gets let go. It's currently snowing outside as it's Christmas day. They managed to get out on Christmas day.
Anouk runs as fast as possible, when she believes she's a safe distance, she falls to her knees and cries. "This is what I dreamed of, being free, so why does achieving my dream hurt so much..." She cried.
At the episode's end you hear this instrumental 1:43
Right before the screen fades out and turns to black, you can see Borealis' spirit sitting next to Anouk.
