Our tongue and nose get stimulated by the fresh citrus flavor of the plant and our ears receive well-being treatments by Roland Voss‘s “Lemongrass” project. Founded in 1996 at times when the world of Lounge & Chillout was an undiscovered open field of creativity, which turned out to be the perfect playground for the manifold musical interest of Roland Voss. Even today you never can be sure what you will get when a new Lemongrass release is out. Early days reflect his passion for cool rhythmic grooves. But later on also NuJazz, Ambient, HipHop, R’n'B, Deep House, Soul and Lounge made their impact, always subordinated to the concept of the particular release and its stylistic and thematic vision.

“This guy has the magic” – a claim you come across quite often when the name “Lemongrass” stands nearby. No surprise really, because Roland Voss always worked hard to make his talents blossom. During the ’70s he played drums with numerous Rock, Funk and Jazz bands. During the ’80s, Roland developed a penchant for electronic instruments. Having patiently honed his skills, it was time for a first record release. His highly acclaimed debut album called “Drumatic Universe” came out on a small German imprint called “Incoming!” in 1997. Soon after one of the hottest Electronic Music labels at that time “Mole Listening Pearls” (a subsidiary of UCMG, today part of the Daredo music group) was so impressed, that they signed him straight away. For many years this has been a fruit-bearing relationship, shooting Lemongrass to the international top league of the scene. At the latest when “Journey to a star” got released in 2001, Roland Voss and his project were everybody’s darling. The song is a timeless beauty considered as one the most influential tracks for modern Lounge music. Over time a few more Lemongrass songs reached this height, such as “Feel Good”, “Elle Et Moi” and “Habla Mi Corazon”.

After 5 extremely successful album releases plus a few EPs it was time for the next step. In 2005 Roland and his brother Daniel founded the label “Lemongrassmusic”, considered as a platform for their own projects and productions. Soon they extended their output with a bunch of talented artists from all over the world. The label kept growing and celebrated their 100th release in the summer of 2012. Needless to say that Lemongrass remained the very center of their work. Brilliant album releases such as “Papillon”, “Filmothèque”, “The 5th Dimension”, “Pour l’amour”, “Hypnosis”, “Sirius” and “Meditation” deepened the project’s international prominence. All in all 17 album releases, 13 EPs, 2 “Best of” and more than 500 compilation appearances speak for themselves.

A helpful aspect to reach this stage is the constant output of domestic releases in various countries. Since the 4th album “Windows” got released by Water Music Records for the US territory, Lemongrass is a big seller overseas too. Most of the album releases also made it to Russia. After “Voyage au centre de la terre” and “Windows” appeared incredibly on old-fashioned audio-cassettes, “Dreamusic” became a solid and steady label partner. Lemongrass is also big in Japan. The label “Receptortune” released 4 albums so far and took the band 3x times on live touring throughout the country.

Lemongrass’ freshest output is their 17th longplayer called “Beauty” showing the mature qualities of Roland Voss at its best. A work that invites you to experience the soul of the music.

You can cut the lemon stalks from the grocery to about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom. Let them sit in the water until a few new roots sprout out, then plant them 45 degrees, not upright. They will have thicker stalks, grow faster, and new baby stalks sprout out quicker.

I have always planted my store bought lemon grass in an upright position and they grow fine but the stalks are not large and they're not full and tall as Marcus has it. I'm gonna grow them at 45 degree angle this year. Thanks for sharing your tip Christine Nguyen

My husband has discovered the joy of gardening and we have enjoyed lovely home grown vegies over the past 12 months. I asked him about lemongrass and he sent me to your link. Over here in Assam, India, tea planters use lemongrass as a fencing around the huge lengthy garden boundaries which serves also as a deterrent to snake invasion and infestation inside gardens.

I like to cook a lot of Thai food, but they don't sell lemongrass at the local grocery store, so I need to buy it online, making it one of the most expensive ingredients. So this video is really useful to me. I just bought a thousand lemongrass seeds for a little over a dollar and fifty cents. If it grows successfully in my backyard, this will instantly go from one of my most expensive ingredients to my cheapest. Thank you very much for this video. :-D

Mark- I mean Marcus, you are really on the YouTube grind, pumping out content as fresh as your garden. The intro was awesome, I'm a movie buff but somehow Gladiator has slipped under my radar, but you've inspired me to watch it. I want to congratulate you on the amazing success of your last video, only in my dreams do I achieve that level of YouTube success. The Gladiator reference near the middle of the video was pretty witty too, I have a real appreciation for puns and analogies. The mosquito slaps really gave me a laugh... keep doing those and I might have to do a "Every mosquito slap from Self Sufficient Me" LOL. I have such a small garden that I'd rather grow other crops like tomatoes and peppers than lemon grass. But when I get my own 100 acre farm someday you bet I'll grow some. Thanks Lucas-us lol... Yeah, I'm pretty wrapped about the scraps video taking off! The truth is you never quite know if or when a video will go crazy and get picked up by the YT algorithm but what I do know is you have to be grinding out the content to give yourself the best chance. Likewise, I also enjoy your vids for the same reasons and I think to add a little fun into gardening content (which can be quite a dry subject sometimes) helps keep people interested. In the Caribbean this is commonly called fever grass. When we are sick we make tea and this helps reduce the fever. And it really does grow like a bush in our yards

Hah! Great video. We are in northern California, grow zone 8. My wife is from Vietnam. A year ago, she purchased lemon grass in a local market and simply planted it in our back yard. Not only did it grow like crazy, it survived last winter. This past summer, we planted more. We had a summer of 40 C degree days. The more we watered, the more it grew. We now have an entire row of lemon grass. We cut it back all the time for use in tea and soups but the plants come right back. What a satisfying discovery. :-)

I grow lemongrass in pots mostly for the leaves to make tea occasionally, but you've inspired me to put some in the ground. I've got a weedy, clay bound yard that seems to grow only plaintain, dandelions, clover and something sharp and pokey...
I'd love to grow a border plant that was also edible. I thought about basil, but I like the idea of the lemongrass. I live in zone 7b so we get hard freezed a couple of times a year, so I guess I could pull it all out, and just replant it. I didn't know the leaves could be used as mulch. I'll consider that once I have an abundance. And I hope deer don't like to eat it. That is another reason I am balked in my garden expeditions , deer eat all of my progress and it's very depressing to do all that hard work just to discover it destroyed overnight.

I live in Florida and the reason why I planted my lemongrass 2 years ago was to help with the mosquitoes. I literally laughed out loud when you said to help with mosquitoes but it doesn't lol 😂 Now here I am looking at YouTube for ways to use my lemongrass since it didn't help with mosquitoes at all!

You might be interested to know I grew it on the Central Coast of NSW with no problem...the spot did have good drainage, as you advocate. I am also growing it here in Sydney in a sunny, flat spot this time, but with free-draining soil. I didn't know to cut it back in winter, so now I will; makes total sense. Excellent tips; thanks.

As it's a grass I wondered about your comparison with lucerne, a legume whose roots have nitrogen-fixing bacteria. A quick search on the internet shows lemongrass to be a nitrogen-hungry plant, so I guess if you've fed it the correct fertiliser to grow well, it will then have nitrogen in it to use as a mulch around trees.

Marcus, we grow it all year round, we live in the hot tropics, our soil is clay and it loves wet feet! Bit opposite to your tips but maybe different in your climate. We use it for fence lines and drains to filter and slow the water flow. You can sit it in water to start the roots or jut put it straight in the ground.

I live in Sumatra Island (Indonesia, tropical climate). Yes I agree with you, here we're also stick lemongrass in any DAMP soil and they will grow abundantly without any care needed. People planted them in public gardens/ponds so anyone in need can always take them for home cooking/medicinal purposes (personal/non-commercial use of course). It's believed to be some venomous animals and bad bugs repellent as well. I love using them the most in curries and stir-fries recipes.

Thank you for the useful info. My family love lemongrass. We put it in Asian dishes; even making some hot or cold drinks as it has an aroma scent, it makes me feel relaxed every time I consume it. I have been planting lemongrass from seeds every year for 3 years in containers. I would say it grow massively quite easily with the right time and temperatures.

I've been thinking about growing lemongrass but did not realize that it was actually edible like an herb.
Also i loved seeing all the wildlife. I have only ever seen a kangaroo in a zoo. If I ever have the opportunity to travel Australia is at the top of my list :)

I found mine in the organic section of the supermarket. It rooted and was planted. It did amazing for our short summer in Pa (USA) I
yanked a bunch and put it in water. When it gets warmer it'll go back in the ground til fall. Love lemon grass 😍

Awesome job on the video! My wife wants lemongrass in the garden. We couldn't find any at the local hardware stores, but she picked up some in the herb section of the grocery store. I cut some off the top and have them sitting in water. Hopefully we will get some roots and I can plant them. I'm happy that we've managed to propagate 1 lemongrass into probably 100 heads now.. XD It's really one of the greatest achievements in gardening in my oppinion. The same with our sweet basils, started from 1, and is now 100's. both plants never seeded. <3 just propagated

My mom used to make fresh lemongrass tea in the morning.
The whole kitchen had a beautiful aroma. With a tiny sugar added, it was a very tasteful nice smelling drink.

I love to use on soups everytime with keffir lime leaves, may it be on seafoods, chicken, beef and vegetables, and add fresh mince ginger and cilantro before putting off the heat and squeeze of lime juice, its really full of aroma and appetizing.

Wow, for me, this video was perfectly timed, lol! I actually have some lemongrass that I purchased in a store sitting in glasses with water that now have roots and some tall leaves growing out of them. Was considering placing them in a large container but hadn't really decided exactly yet. I not only use them for tea and flavor but I found that the leaves smell really nice when rolled and hung in a mesh bag from the rear view mirror. Lasts a long time too if you squeeze the bag from time to time. Not sure about this variety though that I got from the store because it seems less fragrant but I may need to experiment a bit with this or try to find other varieties.

However anyway, I was searching for more detailed info on growing in large quantities but could only find basic info online...then up pops your video! Thanks so much! Keep doing what you do!

Love lemongrass for my ice tea...I love using the leaves while I boil my tea bags on top of stove - use: med.pot, 1-1 1/2 c. sugar, 10-12 tea bags, water to fill up pot, & about 4-6 cleaned & cut- up lemongrass leaves. Low boil tea, turn off & let steep then cool. Fill gal. jug or pitcher with strained tea removing lemongrass leaves, add more water to fill container completely full & refrigerate for at least 2 hrs. Enjoy! This beats using real lemon juice or lemons if you have acid reflux.... I no- longer get that using real lemongrass now.

Pop the leaves into your tea and it has the same effect as the stalk! We chop it up into bits so it fits better

I buy them $1/bundle at Asian markets. Cut 3/4 of top off, stick the stalks on the ground. I get fresh lemongrass June-October in the Midwest (US) zone 5.

I use the leaves tied up in bundles or a few 3" stalks with a few kaffire lime leaves as soup base especially fresh chicken soups. Also, I use stalks as skewers when doing bbq. You can also use chopped/minced stalks in marinades for pork and chicken.

Is this considered an invasive species (similar to bamboo) that can grow out of control? We’re thinking about planting for cooking, but also for mosquito repellent.

Not invasive. For a container, I would plant 3 stalks (5-6 inch stalks) per 5 gallon container. You can root the stalks in a cup of water (cut off the hard end of the stalks, cover 1-2" in water and should root in 5-8 days).

I recently found your channel and I’m so glad I did. You remind me of my Pa who I lost a few years ago. I’m always sad I can’t ask him about preserving vegetables, gardening and composting and all the self sufficient peaceful ways he lived his life in the mid north coast.
I think he would have enjoyed your videos and your dad jokes. He had a really hard life and found his happy place in the garden focusing on his health and well-being.

Hey Mark,
I can grow a tone of wheat grass in just 6 days. The research and data I've gathered shows it to be one of the most nutritious things you can consume. You'll find all you need to know about the benefits of wheat grass online and though we shouldn't eat the pulp, the juice is amazing. Times we have juice nights when we all get together and come up with all healthy juices and smoothies. I'm yet to see anyone complain about wheat grass as it's up there with the top 5 of the best you could consume.
I also recommend using a slow juicer when juicing wheat grass as it minimises oxidation while extracting the juice and keeps all the goodness and beneficial nutrients in the juice. I myself use a manual hand slow juicer just for these situations.

Nice video thank you. If you get the lemongrass oil and put that on your skin it does repel mosquitoes I use it a lot and it does work. Perhaps when you trim the grass rub some of the juice on your skin and also the aroma gets in the air and that will repel the mosquitoes more effectively because the Aroma has to get in the air so I think that should work for you.

Here in Malaysia lemongrass is pretty much a "stick it in the soil and forget it" thing. Very, very tough, some say it's because the lemongrass is closely related to a kind of obnoxious weed we have here but I cant verify this.
However its height & density also makes it a good place for possibly dangerous animals to hide in, like snakes. Australians might want to be careful with this :p. If you are lucky though cute things can happen, I remember when I was a child our hen made her nest in one.
And yes, lemongrass tea taste really good. Serve it Thai style- sweetened with honey, a slice of lemon, serve chilled.

Hi Marcus, could you please advise me, I went on holidays for about 8 days, before leaving I watered my lemongrass, when I came back I noticed the end of the leaves were brown and the new leaves had instead a very very light green colour. I read it was because it was lack of water so I went to water it more but it looks like it's not working and some of the new sprouts have started to rotten (brown colour) and dying. Please help

I got some lemongrass at the store in a container and transplanted into a larger container. It eventually greened back up after some leaves died a bit. However, all of it is narrow, no bulbs. What should I do to ensure my lemongrass grows thicker stalks?

Yep. Still a great video. I acquired some starts this year from a local lady. I started 3 in each bucket and I now have 6 buckets that are doing very well. I've given away 2 buckets all ready and some of the original starts I purchased. I can't wait to divide and propogate. Hurray!!!

There is two types of lemon grass. One is known as normal lemon grass that is used for cooking. It’s stem is greenish yellow color. The other type is non edible but more for medicinal. Mosquito hates its smell. It’s stem is reddish brown in color. Which we call (in Malaysia) serai wangi.
