Buddy
Lemonheads Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's coming over,
We'll go out walking,
Make a call on the way.

She's in the phone booth now,
I'm looking in.
There comes a smile on her face.
There's still some of the same stuff we got yesterday.
There's still some of the same stuff we got yesterday,
Yeah.

I'm too much with myself,
I wanna be someone else.
I'm too much with myself,
I wanna be someone else.
I'm too much with myself,
I wanna be someone else.

So we take off out Fiona's door,
Walk until it's light outside,
Like before when we were on the phone.

We have to laugh to look at each other.
We have to laugh 'cause we're not alone.

As the cars fly up King St.
It's enough to startle us,
It's enough to startle us

I love my drug buddy.
My drug, my drug buddy.

I love my drug buddy.
My drug, my drug buddy.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Lemonheads' song "My Drug Buddy" seem to describe a relationship between two individuals who share a mutual dependency on drugs. The opening verse sets the stage for the narrative, with the singer meeting up with his friend who he describes as his "drug buddy." They plan to go for a walk, but first, she needs to make a call at a phone booth. He watches her and notices a smile on her face, suggesting that whatever news she received was a positive one.

The chorus is particularly telling of the singer's mindset, repeating the phrase "I'm too much with myself, I wanna be someone else" three times. It seems to suggest that he is struggling with some form of personal identity crisis, and that drugs offer a means of escape from that reality. The second verse sees them walking out of Fiona's door and continuing their journey into the night. They have to laugh to look at each other, which could imply that they are struggling to keep up appearances and maintain their shared addiction.

As the cars startle them on the street, the lyrics become more straightforward about the role of drugs in their relationship. The repetition of "I love my drug buddy" reinforces the obsessive nature of their connection, and the song ends on that note.

Overall, "My Drug Buddy" seems to offer a glimpse into the darker side of substance addiction and the toll it can take on individuals and their relationships.

My friend used to sing "I love my drug buddy" to me all the time and I had no idea it was an actual song until years after he died. I thought it was just a silly little thing that he sang to me. I am so happy I get to listen to it all the time. I got the chance to see the Lemonheads live a few months ago and when they played this song I hope my friend was looking over me. I miss you so much Harold <3 I love my drug buddy (we were both clean when he passed away)
