The Lady Is a Tramp
Lena Horne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She likes the theatre and never comes late
She never bothers with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
That's why the lady is a tramp

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
She's broke, and it's "ok"

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
That's why the lady is a tramp

She gets too hungry to wait for dinner at eight
She loves the theatre but never comes late
She'd never bother with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp

She'll have no crap games with sharpies and frauds
And she won't go to Harlem in Lincolns or Fords
And she won't dish the dirt with the rest of the broads
That's why the lady is a tramp

She'd love the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
She's broke, but it's "ok"

Hates California, it's so cold and so damp
That's why the lady

That's why the lady
That's why the lady is a tramp

Overall Meaning

The song "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne is a classic American song that describes the character of a woman who does not conform to society's norms. The song's lyrics suggest that the woman in question is not interested in being a part of high society, with lines like "She never bothers with people she'd hate" and "She'll have no crap games with sharpies and frauds." Instead, she prefers a simpler, more carefree life. She enjoys the theatre and the freedom of having the wind in her hair, but doesn't feel the need to acquiesce to social norms.

The song is a celebration of individuality, and an assertion that people should live life on their own terms. @Michaelahol

The dress is stunning it was like 5 or 6 years ahead of it's time.

@edwardbarnett2331

You have to remember that in those days the movies and what the stars wore set the fashion trends.

@Msboochie2

I thought it was just my teenage daughter and I drooling 🀀 over this beautiful dress. She did not know who Lena Horne was. Thank you Nas (I Can), for facilitating this discussion.

Yass dress was beautiful

@WillScarlet16

MGM didn't know how to handle a classy, sophisticated black woman like her. That's why her movie parts were mostly just cameos in a nightclub scene like this. And there was a sting in that - since her part was never a major plot point, it made it easier for southern theaters to cut her out completely.

@fromthesidelines

That's why she was NEVER seen in Southern theaters; their attitude was-- if black performers were allowed to appear more frequently in musicals like this, they'd boycott MGM.....and any other studio that "forced" those films on them. This was probably one reason why she had that "frozen grin" at 2:59.

@cockeyedoptimista

Oww, that is painful.

@TashiSoCali

Imagine depriving yourself of Lena Horne on purpose
