My Beautiful
Lennon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Verse 1]
Wake up every morning to the sound of the radio screaming
6:30, 7:30, 8 o'clock and I got to leave
Walk out on the street with nothing on except the shame of last night
And a number in my hand of a man I don't even know

[Chorus]
Where do I fit in
Where is my place here
What do I need to say, what do you want to hear
Where do I fit in
If she's in your bed
Where is my beautiful

[Verse 2]
Late night, long day, doesn't make much difference to me anyway
You called, I answered, but baby I'm only half awake
Hush little one with you here everything is going to be okay
Is all you say but what if things don't go that way

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
It's over, we both know, we're both tired of playing the parts
I said goodbye, you said oh well nothing's really lost
Call every now and then just to hear your voice talk to me
You still say everything's alright but it's not and that's something that you're too blind to see

[Chorus 2x]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Lennon's song My Beautiful describe the turmoil of a person grappling with feelings of isolation and not belonging in the world around them. The verse recounts a morning routine of waking up to the cacophony of the radio, preparing to leave for the day, and leaving with only a phone number in hand. The chorus asks the question of where this person fits in the grand scheme of things, what they can say to be accepted, and where they belong if the person they desire is already in someone else’s bed. The second verse speaks of the weariness of the singer, who is always half awake when they answer the call of the loved one. The voice in their ear reassures them that everything will be okay, but they are not so sure. The final verse speaks of the end of the relationship, with both parties tired of pretending to be something they are not. The lover remains oblivious that the person on the line is not okay.

Throughout the song, Lennon's lyrics speak to an audience of people struggling with feeling like outcasts or outsiders. The song touches on themes of rejection, loneliness, and the search for self-acceptance in a world that may reject them. The chorus seems to ask questions to be answered by society. Where do people who feel like outcasts fit in? What does society need to hear to accept them? The song highlights the importance of feeling seen and accepted, and the pain of being rejected or feeling invisible, even when in the presence of someone who claims to understand.

@2lazybum

I saw her open for Alice Cooper in chicago years ago and she was awesome. Nobody knew she was but when she was done everybody went nuts. She was signing cds etc after the show and some drunk asked her to sign his underwear and without hesitating reached over and autographed the waist band of his underpants someone asked her how she could do that and she said "its not the worse thing ive been asked to sign"

@mblovesdotn

listened to this because of Travis when it first came out, but the extended version of this song is better, with the additional Travis vocals towards the end.

@taftmcintosh

They compliment each other well. The guy has obviously done alot of living. And so has she. They used to play downtown here sometimes. I wonder if they met in this area? Regardless the guitar part in the beginning is amazing and is a perfect example of the counterpoint Travis Meeks is capable of.

@glan7998
