Rain
Lennon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

too much to say and no one to listen
seems the story of our lives
was i right about how we should be living
must be looking through someone else's eyes

i don't care
what you say
fuck the words
that get in our way

bring us rain
can't make it pour
bring us life
can't make us live
bring it all
don't have to take
i will not accept your blame

forsake my freedom to give you your voice
how could you never learn to speak
take these moments and make them what they're worth
you can't keep living through me

i don't care
what you think
fuck the air
that makes us breathe

bring us rain
can't make it pour
bring us life
can't make us live
bring it all

don't have to take
i will not accept your blame

Overall Meaning

The song "Rain" by John Lennon was originally released as the B-side to "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles in 1966. The lyrics express the frustration and sense of isolation that comes with feeling unheard and misunderstood. The opening lines set the tone for the entire song: "Too much to say and no one to listen / Seems the story of our lives." These lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness and pessimism.

Lennon's frustration with the limitations of language is expressed in the chorus: "Bring us rain / Can't make it pour / Bring us life / Can't make us live / Bring it all / Don't have to take / I will not accept your blame." He seems to be saying that words are not enough to express the depth of his feelings and that he is not willing to be blamed for the shortcomings of others.

The second stanza touches on themes of codependency and the difficulty of establishing boundaries. The lines "Forsake my freedom to give you your voice / How could you never learn to speak" seem to be directed towards someone who relied too heavily on Lennon for emotional support. Here, Lennon is trying to draw a line in the sand and regain his sense of independence.

Overall, "Rain" is a powerful and melancholic song that delves into the complexity of human relationships and communication.

Ringo sounded as if he had 4 or 5 floor- toms and snares ....great performance

I recall an interview he gave in which he was asked which Beatles track was his best work, and he said this one. He told us that he knows his own style well, but that this number was almost unrecognizable to him, and that he didn't think he'd be able to reproduce it. He's been called the king of feel - here's good example of that.

@jimcavanaugh8838

Yes .... How he got so much out of that kit is amazing.. And the tie is so Cool

@danielboyd4079

Sorry. Iโ€™ll have to go back and listen a second time bc I was mesmerized by Paulโ€™s bass playing the first time through

@raanangeberer1903

Pete never could have pulled this off.

@CS-mo7xp

Ringo's input to the band's sound is often overlooked... I sometimes refer to him as 'the 4th Beatle'.
