Strawberry Fields Forever
Lennon / McCartney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever

No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right, that is I think it's not too bad
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever

Always, no sometimes, think it's me, but you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know I mean a 'Yes' but it's all wrong, that is I think I disagree
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about

Overall Meaning

The song begins with the invitation to take a journey with the Beatles to a place called Strawberry Fields, which is later revealed to be a real place, a large garden in Liverpool near John Lennon's childhood home. This invitation is followed by the assertion that nothing there is real and nothing should cause anxiety or worry. The line "living is easy with eyes closed," along with the entire verse that follows, suggests that the singer prefers to escape from the harsher realities of life into a dreamlike state of existence. As the song progresses, the singer suggests that other people may not be able to understand or join them in this escape, but that it is still worthwhile to try. The refrain serves as a reminder throughout the song of the joyful and carefree nature of trip to Strawberry Fields.

One interpretation of the song is that it speaks to the desire for escapism that many people feel. The Strawberry Fields that Lennon sings about is a place of refuge where the stresses of reality can cease to exist, if only for a moment. The song also touches on the theme of perception and the way that different people can experience the same place or situation in vastly different ways, with some being able to tune in or join the singer in his idyllic state.

So glad John sang his song, and not Paul..
Paul’s great dont get me wrong, but after 3 decades of loving the Beatles, I’ve discovered more than anything, its John whom i really love.. Hadnt even realized that until one day making a playlist of all my fav Beatles songs:
Day in the Life
Strawberry Fields
Twist & Shout
In my Life
*Something
*While my Guitar…
You’ve got to hide your love away
Dont let me down
*Yesterday
Across the Universe
Lucy in the Sky w/ Diamonds
*Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts…
*With a little help from my friends
Ticket to Ride

So not ONLY Johns songs, but wow. I REALLY prefer his songs in general! Was quite a realization that day!

This is amazing. The Beatles admitted that none of them could read or write music, yet they can play and compose with transcendental ability. Talk about being able to think outside of the box!

@47imagine

A lot of musicians don't know how to read and write music. It's not that big a deal. You just learn an instrument, chords and riffs and develop by ear as you go. But yeah, these guys were really good at that.

@TopherBlairMusic

It helped that the palette was so empty back then. Rock was in its infancy.

@47imagine Well they are just four mediocre musicians who are only good when but together in a band…

according to John at least

Except Paul is acknowledged to be an incredible bass player.
He is also an excellent pianist, drummer and lead guitarist.

@pattyayers

Lots of great musicians don’t read music- has always been that way

Would love to hear a full song version with Paul McCartney - his voice and the piano!

I think there is a video of a rare "Paul singing John's songs" medley out there somewhere that I've seen, sadly/obviously many years after John died.

@LingusDaDingus

He did live a few times

@cg9234

There is a live version where paul plays three lennon songs and one of them is strawberry fields forever, maybe you like it
