You're The One
Lennon John & Yoko Ono Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mountains may move, river may run

But you make me be myself, you make me be

How do I tell you, how do I tell

You're the one
Stars may move, time may run

But you make me free myself

But you make me free

How do I tell you, how do I tell

You're the one, you're the one

In the world's eye, we were Laurel and Hardy

In our minds, we were Heathcliff and Cathy

In a moment of wisdom

We were a wizard and a witch

In a moment of freedom

We were Don Quijote and Sancho

In reality, we were just a boy and a girl

Who never looked back

How do I tell you

How do I tell you

How do I tell you

How do I tell you

How do I tell you

How do I tell you

How can I tell you

How could I tell you

You're the one

You're the one

You're the one

You're the one

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, "Mountains may move, Rivers may run, But you make me be myself, You make me be" highlights the impact and influence that the person they are singing to has on them. The following lines, "Stars may move, Time may run, But you make me free myself, You make me free" further emphasize the same point. They acknowledge that the world may change, and time may go by, but their love makes them feel alive and free. They repeat the question, "How do I tell you? How do I tell/You're the one?" as a way of expressing their desire to express their love to the person but struggling to put the feeling into words.

The second stanza emphasizes the different roles they both have played in their relationship. They reference various fictional or historical characters, such as Laurel and Hardy, Heathcliff and Cathy, Don Quixote and Sancho which they have portrayed in their minds for each other. These roles helped them escape from reality and showed their playful and imaginative sides. However, they acknowledge that at the end of the day, they are just two people in love who never look back.

Overall, the song is about the power of love, and how it can make one feel alive and free. The repeated question of "How do I tell you? How do I tell/You're the one?" captures the difficulty of putting the intense feeling of love into words.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this song, just sucks that THIS version was never officially released :( It was meant for this album but eventually was added to "Milk & Honey" but a stripped down version without the drum looks and the snare (echo) and the backup vocals...I guess so that it could fit in?

Great song to dance to!!! It could have been another "Walking on Thin Ice"

Good song, but yeah Yoko singing is very original, Bonnie Tyler would have made a hit of this song . On the other hand John was right when he said Yoko had talent
