Flower Child
Lenny Kravitz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With a flower in her hair
Feel her gentle spirit
As the champa fills the air
She wears rubys on her fingers
Tiny bells upon her toes
She's the finest thing
I've ever seen
Flower child yeah, flower child
Flower child oh yeah
She's a psychedelic princess
On a magic carpet ride
And where her trip will carry you
Is somewhere you can't find
She's on a plane of higher consciousness
Meditation is the key
She's got her shit together
'Cause her soul and mind are free
Free
Flower child, free yeah yeah yeah yeah,
Flower child that is
Flower child, oh yeah
Flower child yeah
My little flower child
Flower child yeah
She's a child of Martin Luther
As a freedom fighter she
Speaks of liberation on the land
And on the sea
Her eyes are made of sunshine
And her lips are jelly sweet
Flower child yeah
My little flower child
Flower child oh yeah
Flower child yeah
My little flower child
Flower child oh yeah
You gonna free me
You gonna free me
You gonna free free free free free yeah.
The song Flower Child by Lenny Kravitz is an ode to the free-spirited women of the 1960s counterculture movement, who were known for their bohemian style and rejection of societal norms. The lyrics describe a woman dressed in purple velvets and a flower in her hair, exuding a gentle spirit as the scent of champa fills the air. She is adorned with rubys on her fingers and tiny bells on her toes, and the singer finds her to be the finest thing he's ever seen, even loving the ring inside her nose.
The woman is described as a psychedelic princess, taking the listener on a magic carpet ride to unknown destinations. She is elevated to a higher consciousness through meditation and has her "shit together" because her soul and mind are free. The singer also notes that she is a child of Martin Luther, likely referring to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and a freedom fighter who speaks of liberation both on land and at sea. Her eyes are full of sunshine, and her lips are sweet like jelly. The song ends with a repeated plea for the flower child to "free" the singer.
The song is a celebration of the hippie movement of the 1960s and the free-spirited women who were at the forefront of this cultural revolution. It speaks to the idea of breaking free from societal constraints and embracing individuality and personal freedom.
