If Six Was Nine
Lenny Kravitz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't mind, no baby I don't mind
And if the mountains fell in the sea
It ain't me, you know you've got to be free
I got my own world to live through
And I ain't gonna copy you
I don't mind, no baby I don't mind,
If all the hippies cut off all their hair,
I don't care, no baby I don't care
Because I, I've got my own world to live through,
And I ain't gonna copy you
White collar conservative walkin' down the street
Pointin' their plastic finger at me,
Hopin' my kind will drop and die
But I'm gonna wave my freak flag high,
So..., play on drummer
I've got my own world to live through,
And I ain't gonna copy you
Lenny Kravitz's song If Six Was Nine has a lot of symbolism and social commentary in the lyrics. The opening lines, "If the sun refused to shine, I don't mind, no baby I don't mind, and if the mountains fell in the sea, it ain't me, you know you've got to be free" suggest that the singer is comfortable with chaos and unpredictability. He is not attached to a particular outcome and encourages others to embrace their freedom.
The lyrics "I got my own world to live through, and I ain't gonna copy you" highlights the importance of individuality and self-expression. The singer is committed to living his life on his terms and not conforming to societal pressures or expectations. The phrase "if six turned out to be nine" is a reference to the uncertainty and fluidity of reality. It suggests that anything is possible.
In the final verse, the lyrics critique conservative and conformist attitudes. The singer feels judged by these people and their "plastic finger" pointing at him. However, he is unapologetic about who he is and intends to "wave [his] freak flag high." This line emphasizes the importance of individuality and owning one's identity.
