The Difference Is Why
Lenny Kravitz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I never said I was god
And each day I wonder where you are
How could our lives once be so together
Now we're apart
I know we can make it
But where do we start?
Sometimes the scales get unbalanced
The difference is why
The difference is why
You say you can't trust me
Have you tried?
You say you don't love me
That's a lie
There are so many so many rainbows
That we were to climb
But baby baby why can't we survive?
We've got to get our heads untangled
And free our state of mind
The difference is why
The difference is why
Sometimes the scales get unbalanced
Don't you know the reason why?
The difference is why
The difference is why
Does this have to mean goodbye?
In this song, Lenny Kravitz is grappling with a relationship that has turned sour. He admits that he is just a human, not a deity, and wonders where his partner has gone. The two of them used to be so close, but now they are apart. He believes that they can make things work again, but he doesn't know where to start. Oftentimes, the scales of a relationship get unbalanced, but he is unsure of why. He implores his partner to trust him and tries to convince them that their claim of not loving him is a lie. They had so many things they were going to do, so many ambitions to fulfill, but now Lenny is left to wonder why they can't survive together.
The chorus of the song, "The difference is why," is repeated throughout to emphasize the central idea that the differences between people and the imbalances in relationships are what cause strife. Lenny argues that they must untangle their heads and free their state of mind to have a chance at being together again. The last line, "Does this have to mean goodbye?" signals a plea for reconciliation and a desire to continue the relationship.
