What The ... Are We Saying
Lenny Kravitz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Or is the fate of man at hands ?
Will we live or shall we die ?
How will we ever know if we never try ?
The government's the devil's hands
It's a lie and it's a scam
They wind us up, put us down, and watch us go
There's a big surprise
What the f*** are we saying ?
Do we feel what we dream about ?
We've got to keep on praying
And one day we'll see the light
I've been lost in the name of love
And we kill our brothers daily in the name of God
We'd better chill before we take on some tribulation
And if we realized
Then we'd make a little love now sing
What the f*** are we saying ?
Do we believe what we read about ?
We've got to keep on praying
And one day we'll see the light
And one day we'll see the light
And one day we'll see the light
And one day we'll see the light
What the f*** are we saying ?
Do we believe what we dream about ?
We've got to keep on praying
And one day we'll see the light
And one day we'll see the light
And one day we'll see the light
And one day we'll see the light
The lyrics of Lenny Kravitz's song What The .... Are We Saying? tackle the existential questions of human existence - and all the uncertainty that comes with it. The songwriter is questioning the fate of mankind and wonders whether we will ever understand it. These are questions that have plagued humans for centuries and continue to do so in modern times. Kravitz bluntly observes that the government often has a hand in the destruction of society: "The government's the devil's hands, it's a lie and it's a scam". He suggests that we are akin to puppets that are "wound up, put down, and watched go" - we are at the mercy of powers that we have no control over.
Kravitz raises the importance of love and faith in finding the light, both literally and metaphorically. He warns that we should be wary of falling for the destructive aspects of love, and he reminds us that religion has often been a driving force for violence: "we kill our brothers daily in the name of God". He suggests that we need to "chill" before taking on tribulations and instead make a little love. The song ultimately calls for introspection, reflection, and prayer in the hope of finding answers to the complex human condition.
