Africa
Leo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear the drums
Echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in 12: 30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards
Salvation
I stopped an old man along the way,
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancinet melodies
He turned to me as if to say, Hurry boy, it's waiting there for
You
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serangetti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that
I've become
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
{Instrumental break}
Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa, I passed some rains down in
Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa, I passed some rains down in
Africa

I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Toto's hit song "Africa" paint a vivid picture of a person travelling to Africa in search of something deep within. The opening line "I hear the drums echoing tonight" sets the scene of the traveller being surrounded by the sounds of African rhythms. However, the person they are travelling to meet only hears "whispers of some quiet conversation" showing a disconnect between the two. The person is coming in on a 12:30 flight reflected in the "moonlit wings" which guide the traveller towards his destination with the hope of finding "salvation."

Along the way, the traveller stops to talk to an elderly man hoping to find some inspiration from his words or ancient melodies. The man responds by saying "hurry boy, it's waiting there for you" encouraging the traveller to continue to push forward towards his goals. The chorus then talks about the difficulties that the traveller must face in order to achieve his goals. It says "it's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you, there's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do" emphasising the importance of what he is doing.

The verse mentioning the "wild dogs crying out in the night" symbolises the hardships and obstacles that the traveller faces on his journey. Yet, despite these challenges, he knows that he "must do what's right." The lyrics end with the repetition of "I bless the rains down in Africa" along with the call to action to "take some time to do the things we never had."
